Thrust bearing size chart: model, direction and assembly height

Query 1,530 source-labelled models in 1,659 bearing or specified-seat configurations. Filter the shaft bore, outside envelope and complete height together. A housing-washer opening, one washer’s thickness or a roller diameter is not the same measurement.

These rows describe complete cylindrical roller thrust bearings, not the roller cage or individual washers sold separately.

Filters update immediately. Dimensions match the envelope shown in each row; optional seat configurations are labelled separately and are not new catalogue part numbers. Changing construction clears dimension fields. Changing units converts valid inputs; inch results are conversions rounded to six decimals, not an inch-series classification.

260 configurations match. Showing 1–24.

Why apparently similar dimensions are kept separate
Shaft bore vs housing opening
The shaft washer locates on the shaft; the housing washer is a different component. The original symbol stays below each value. NSK double-direction rows use d2 for the actual shaft bore; the separate drawing dimension d must not replace it.
Complete height vs part thickness
H, T and indexed T symbols can describe different complete configurations across manufacturers. Read the row’s scope. A central washer thickness or a partial height in a drawing is not the complete assembly height.
With a separate seat washer
A sphered housing washer and an additional aligning seat washer are not the same part. The chart adds a separate configuration only when the source explicitly identifies the seat washer and gives its resulting outside envelope and height. The extra height is not calculated by adding component thicknesses.
Direction is about axial force
One-direction and both-direction describe axial load support, not clockwise versus counterclockwise rotation. Double direction is not a claim of double the load capacity.

Checks before using a dimensional candidate

  1. Match the complete marking, bearing construction and whether separate washers belong to the assembly. Do not identify an OEM kit by dimensions alone.
  2. Match the actual shaft bore, outside envelope and installed height. For a seat-washer configuration, check the named seat and mating spherical geometry.
  3. Open the product record for available ratings, speeds, chamfers and component dimensions. Confirm that load ratings are axial before using a calculation tool.
  4. Check minimum load, lubrication, fits, shoulders, retention and temperature with the applicable manufacturer instructions. Thrust ball bearings cannot supply the missing radial support.

Source-property snapshot 2026-10-03. The chart is an independent nominal-dimension reference, not a full catalogue, stock list, toleranced drawing or replacement approval. Separate washers/cages, combined radial/axial units, precision angular-contact assemblies and plain thrust pads need their own geometry. Rows without unambiguous manufacturer dimensions remain outside this chart. Construction guidance: NSK Thrust Ball Bearings and Bearing ABCs; dimensions and optional configurations: the retained manufacturer properties.

Structure · function · identification

What is this bearing type?

Thrust roller bearings are built primarily for axial load. Cylindrical, needle and spherical roller thrust designs have different raceway geometry, alignment behaviour and permitted radial loading; “roller thrust” alone is not enough to select a bearing.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
Cylindrical roller thrustSupports axial load; differential sliding affects speed capability.Do not assign radial-load capacity to this construction.
Needle roller thrustUses a compact axial roller-and-cage arrangement.Check whether separate race washers or prepared adjacent raceways are specified.
Spherical roller thrustA self-aligning design can support radial load when an appropriate axial load is also present.Check the permitted combined-load conditions for the exact bearing.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Washer, cage and rolling-element scope must remain explicit. A replacement washer is not a complete thrust bearing, and two assemblies do not automatically establish a valid double-direction installation.

What the family name cannot tell you

The axial height symbol and component dimensions must come from the drawing. Do not assume a catalogue field labelled “width” always means the width B used for radial bearings.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Identify the roller type and allowed load directions.
  2. Confirm washer support, minimum load and the installed orientation.
  3. Compare complete-assembly dimensions and the specified lubrication and speed conditions.

Detailed identification & selection

Thrust roller bearings: cylindrical, needle, tapered and spherical compared

A roller thrust search needs more than an inside and outside diameter. Identify the roller geometry, load directions, race-washer supply and complete axial stack before choosing a model.

Four roller thrust constructions

TypeTypical selection reasonImportant boundary
Cylindrical roller thrustHigh axial load and axial stiffnessA thrust-only design; differential sliding affects speed selection.
Needle roller thrustCompact axial section with suitable racewaysA cage-only assembly may need separate race washers.
Tapered roller thrustA documented tapered-roller axial arrangementRib/washer geometry varies; not a radial cup-and-cone unit laid on its side.
Spherical roller thrustHigh axial duty with a self-aligning racewaySome combined radial load is possible only within the exact design's restrictions.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

The blanket statement 'every thrust bearing cannot take radial load' is wrong. It applies to thrust ball and ordinary cylindrical roller thrust designs, but not indiscriminately to all spherical roller thrust arrangements.

Spherical roller thrust versus radial spherical roller

A spherical roller thrust bearing uses an axial load path with a self-aligning housing raceway. It is selected for axial duty; radial force, where permitted, must remain within the manufacturer's combined-load conditions. A radial spherical roller bearing has a different arrangement and nominal envelope.

CheckWhy it matters
Axial load and reversalA single thrust arrangement does not automatically react reverse axial load.
Radial-to-axial relationshipCombined-load permission is conditional, not an unrestricted radial rating.
Minimum loadThe bearing may need a specified minimum axial load or spring arrangement.
Alignment and seatsSelf-alignment does not remove the need for correct washer support and documented limits.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Cylindrical versus tapered roller thrust details

NSK describes cylindrical roller thrust designs as axial-only supports with high axial rigidity; differential sliding makes the speed limit an important check. For its tapered roller thrust range, TT has a housing-washer rib while TTF does not. Keep these brand-specific construction distinctions instead of translating a generic 'tapered thrust' name into one design.

Need to decideRecord explicitly
Radial guidanceWhether the exact design supplies permitted guidance or needs a separate radial support.
Washer locationHow the races remain centred over the rolling track.
Speed and heatThe documented lubricant and bearing-specific limiting conditions.
Replacement scopeAll washers, rollers/cage and required retention—not only one ring.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

A rib that guides a component does not by itself establish an unrestricted external radial-load capacity.

Cage-only, washers and complete assembly height

A needle or cylindrical roller thrust cage can be supplied separately from its race washers. Where the adjacent machine surface serves as a raceway, it must meet the specified hardness, finish and geometry. An ordinary spacer is not automatically a qualified rolling raceway.

Dimension or supplyCheck before comparing
Inside and outside diameterWhich component or complete assembly the dimensions describe.
Axial heightWhether it includes both required race washers.
Washer seriesShaft-piloted, housing-piloted and other washer designs have different locating roles.
JTEKT WS.811 / GS.811 examplesRespectively shaft- and housing-piloted washer series for the stated metric 811 cylindrical thrust application.
Complete part identityCage assembly, washer pair and retained unit numbers are not interchangeable labels.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Lubrication and minimum-load decisions

Lubricant must reach the roller ends, raceways and guided contacts required by the design. Do not transfer a grease recommendation from a radial bearing to a thrust assembly with a different oil path.

NSK's spherical roller thrust overview specifies oil lubrication for the range it describes because grease access to some internal contacts is difficult. That is source- and design-scoped guidance, not a claim that every maker's thrust bearing can never use grease.

  1. Identify the exact bearing, orientation and lubricant method.
  2. Obtain its load, speed and minimum-load conditions, including transient and starting duty.
  3. Check supply, distribution, drain/return and temperature together.
  4. Keep missing factors unresolved; do not use a universal percentage of dynamic capacity as an invented minimum load.

Application checks for axial-load machinery

These are family-selection starting points from manufacturer application references. A crane hook, propeller shaft, turbocharger or vehicle kit still needs its own complete assembly design and safety requirements.

Application contextUseful starting constructionQuestion to answer

Before fitting or replacing a roller thrust assembly

  1. Isolate the equipment and support the axial load before removing retainers.
  2. Record the shaft washer, housing washer, cage and direction of thrust.
  3. Check seats, shoulders, raceway surfaces and the method of keeping components centred.
  4. Verify complete height, lubricant passages and any spring/minimum-load arrangement.
  5. Follow the exact fitting and retention procedure, then verify load direction and freedom from unintended contact.

No universal installation torque, clearance or preload is supplied here. The checklist identifies required information; it is not a substitute for the assembly-specific procedure.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Is a needle thrust bearing the same as a radial needle bearing?

No. The load path and raceway arrangement differ. A small radial section and a small axial stack are different design requirements.

Can I omit the thrust washers?

Only if the design explicitly uses qualified adjacent surfaces as the raceways. Matching stack height does not establish suitable hardness, finish or support.

Does a roller thrust bearing always need oil?

The requirement is design-specific. Follow the exact catalogue and assembly instructions; do not generalize one manufacturer's spherical-thrust guidance to all types.

Can a spherical roller thrust bearing carry only radial load?

Do not assume that. Permitted radial load is tied to axial loading and manufacturer restrictions, including minimum-load conditions.
