Needle bearing size chart by construction

Search 3,031 source-labelled records. Start with the construction, then enter the dimensions you know. A diameter under rollers Fw is not the bore d of an inner ring; a cage outside Ew is not an outer-ring D.

Fw is the diameter under rollers; C is the drawn-cup width. Not a ring-bore d.

Filters update immediately. Designation search ignores separators, but the full recorded marking remains in each result. Changing construction clears dimensional filters because their meanings can change. Changing units converts valid entered dimensions, not the physical size. Inch display is converted and rounded to six decimals; the source-series filter is separate.

Read the symbols before choosing a candidate
Fw / d
Fw describes the opening under the needles. d describes a ring bore. For a ringless design, the mating shaft is part of the rolling contact, not merely a mounting seat.
D / Ew
D describes the outside of a ring or drawn cup. Ew describes the needle complement in a radial cage assembly; check the mating housing raceway separately.
B / C / Bc / U
These width symbols are kept as reported. A ring width and a cage width are different checks even when their numbers happen to match.
Dc1 / Dc / Dw on thrust cages
The inner and outer cage datums and roller diameter do not specify the complete height with washers. Radial and thrust candidates are not interchangeable.

Turn the table into an identification checklist

  1. Record the full marking and whether rings or washers are separate. Search spaces and suffixes as recorded; a bare series is not a confirmed replacement.
  2. Choose the construction and measure the appropriate features. A free drawn cup can deform: nominal catalogue dimensions do not replace the specified installed-gauge check.
  3. Open a candidate to inspect its other dimensions, ratings, closure and source information. Confirm the applicable raceway finish, hardness, shaft/housing tolerances and lubrication.
  4. For thrust cages, identify both running surfaces and any washers. Do not calculate a complete stack height from roller diameter alone.

Scope: manufacturer-property snapshot 2026-10-03. This chart is not the entire manufacturer range, stock availability, a toleranced drawing or fitment approval. Separate rings, washers, clutches and combined/conical units are not included. Records without unambiguous source dimensions remain outside the table. Technical basis: NSK needle-bearing construction guidance, JTEKT needle-bearing classification tables and each retained product property.

Structure · function · identification

What is this bearing type?

Needle roller bearings use long, small-diameter rollers to provide rolling contact in a compact section. Radial needle bearings and axial needle roller assemblies carry load in different directions and must not be treated as the same construction.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
Drawn cupA thin formed outer ring provides the raceway.Check the required housing support and fit.
Solid ringA machined ring has its own mounting dimensions. The same shaft diameter does not make it interchangeable with a drawn cup.
Cage assembly / no inner ringSome designs run on a prepared shaft raceway. The shaft surface becomes a bearing component, not just a mounting seat.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Caged and full-complement versions have different speed and load characteristics. An inner ring, seals and axial-guidance components may be present or absent; preserve that distinction in the full designation.

What the family name cannot tell you

Removing the inner ring is not a general space-saving modification. Designs that run directly on a shaft need the specified raceway hardness, finish and geometry.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Identify radial versus axial duty first.
  2. Record whether inner and outer raceways are supplied or formed by adjacent parts.
  3. Check the shaft/housing preparation and complete assembly before comparing catalogue dimensions.

Technical reference basis: NSK: Needle Roller Bearings. Explanation and lookup workflow: BearingScope. Manufacturer-specific limits remain attached to the exact product record.

Detailed identification & selection

Needle bearing construction, measurement and shaft-raceway checks

A needle-bearing query may describe a complete radial bearing, a cage assembly, a thrust assembly or only loose rollers. Identify that scope before comparing dimensions or looking for an inner ring.

Drawn cup, solid ring, cage assembly and thrust type

ConstructionWhat is suppliedKey distinction
Drawn cup / shell typeThin formed outer race with rollersHousing support and the specified press fit are part of the installation.
Solid / machined ringA thicker machined outer ringDo not substitute a thin shell solely because the bore agrees.
Cage and needle assemblyCage and rollers without conventional raceway ringsAdjacent shaft and housing surfaces may form the raceways.
Needle roller thrust assemblyAxial roller/cage assembly, with or without specified washersAn axial assembly is not a radial needle bearing.
Track roller / cam followerA track-running outer ring and the specified mounting structureIdentify stud or yoke arrangement and track contact separately.
Drawn-cup roller clutchA directional locking mechanismTorque and overrun direction differ from ordinary radial-bearing duty.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Radial and axial refer to force relative to the shaft. A part being able to rotate in either direction does not establish axial load capacity.

With or without an inner ring?

A needle bearing without an inner ring can run directly on a suitably prepared shaft raceway. If that shaft cannot provide the required hardened, finished raceway, a compatible inner ring may be needed. IKO supplies separately identified rings for this purpose.

An ordinary shaft sleeve is not automatically a bearing raceway. Confirm the inner ring's outside raceway diameter, width, chamfers, lubrication features and match to the needle assembly. Its inside diameter describes the shaft seat, not the needle complement's inscribed-circle diameter.

  1. Identify whether the original design supplies an inner ring or uses the shaft directly.
  2. Keep the shaft-seat diameter separate from the roller-envelope dimension.
  3. Record the specified raceway hardness, surface finish and geometry from the exact catalogue or drawing.
  4. Do not add or remove an inner ring merely to make a dimension search return a result.

How to measure and search a needle bearing

First identify the component you are measuring. A bare roller's diameter and length do not identify a complete bearing. A bearing without an inner ring needs its drawing's roller-envelope dimension; a complete bearing with an inner ring also has a shaft-bore dimension.

ItemRecordAvoid confusing it with
Complete radial bearing with inner ringBore, outside diameter, overall width and full markingA separate inner-ring part number.
Radial bearing without inner ringInscribed-circle / shaft-raceway dimension, outer dimension and widthThe outside diameter of a fitted sleeve.
Drawn cupCatalogue nominal dimensions and cup constructionA squeezed or distorted loose-shell reading as a certified fit tolerance.
Axial assemblyInside diameter, outside diameter and axial height; washer scopeRadial-bearing width or the height without required washers.
Loose needlesRoller diameter, length and end/profile specificationA complete bearing's d×D×B.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Keep metric and inch series explicit. Convert units using 1 in = 25.4 mm, but do not round an imperial measurement to the nearest metric model and declare it equivalent. Nominal size is not manufacturing tolerance.

Caged, full-complement, open-end and closed-end shells

A cage spaces and guides the rollers. A full-complement construction packs more rollers into the available space, changing the load/speed trade-off. The correct choice depends on the documented duty, not on which design visibly contains more metal.

Open-end and closed-end shell variants are separate constructions; closed-end does not mean a universal two-sided contact seal. IKO lists both metric and inch shell families. Preserve the entire series and closure description rather than translating every closed form into '2RS'.

Sealed, stainless, plastic-cage and split-cage requests require their own material and design records. This guide does not assign those features to every needle bearing.

Applications, advantages and limitations

Needle rollers are useful where radial space is restricted. Manufacturer examples include gears, speed reducers and selected machine-tool arrangements; thrust needle assemblies also appear in compact axial supports. A compact section does not remove the need for suitable raceways and lubrication.

NeedUseful starting pointDo not assume
Compact radial supportDrawn cup, solid needle bearing or cage assemblyThat all three use the same shaft or housing preparation.
Compact axial supportNeedle thrust assembly and required race washersThat a radial needle bearing carries the same axial duty.
External cam or track contactCam follower or roller followerThat an ordinary radial outer ring is a suitable track roller.
One-way drive or backstopA documented roller clutchThat any needle bearing provides directional locking.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Against a ball bearing, compare the available radial section, raceway scope and required load directions. Against another roller design, compare actual ratings and installation space; the word 'needle' is not a performance grade. Vehicle, chainsaw, bicycle and transmission fitment still requires the specific equipment and part record.

Needle versus ball bearing versus plain bushing

Choose by the contact system and support requirements, not by the shared outside dimensions. Needle bearings offer a compact radial section; a plain bushing uses sliding contact instead of rolling elements.

DecisionNeedle roller bearingBall bearing / plain bushing
ContactSlender rollers run on defined raceways.Balls roll on raceways; a bushing has a sliding interface.
Radial spaceA low-section option where a suitable shaft raceway or inner ring is available.Compare the complete ball-bearing envelope; for a bushing include its wall and running clearance.
Axial supportA radial needle design is not a thrust assembly.Ball-bearing axial capacity depends on family; a plain bush needs its specified flange or thrust surface for axial duty.
Lubrication decisionUse the lubricant and delivery method for the roller/raceway duty.Ball bearings also need their specified lubrication; bushings differ by material and may use supplied lubrication or an external film.
Replacement checkPreserve raceway finish, hardness, fit, clearance and the verified load/speed limits.Changing from rolling to sliding contact is a redesign, not an automatic cross-reference.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

For a general cylindrical-roller alternative, compare rib arrangement and complete radial envelope. Neither 'roller' nor 'needle' guarantees a higher permitted speed or a drop-in replacement.

Before installing or removing a needle bearing

This checklist helps identify missing assembly information. Exact press tools, fits and extraction methods differ between a thin shell, machined ring, loose needle set and thrust assembly.

  1. Isolate the machine and record the complete marking, orientation, supplied rings and washers.
  2. Check the shaft/housing drawing and whether the shaft itself is a raceway.
  3. Inspect surfaces for damage and confirm the required fit and finish before installing a new bearing.
  4. Use the specified support and fitting tool for the actual bearing construction; do not press through the rolling elements or deform a thin shell.
  5. Retain the correct roller set and cage. Do not combine random loose needles because their approximate diameter looks right.
  6. For removal, establish access, retention and which component will be discarded before choosing a puller. Stop if the method would damage the reusable raceway.
  7. Use the documented lubricant and inspect freedom of movement and the completed assembly according to the machine instructions.

A generic size chart cannot supply a Toyota differential extraction procedure, chainsaw grease specification or bicycle shock-kit compatibility. Those remain equipment-specific requests.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Are needle bearings the same as roller bearings?

Needle bearings belong to the roller-bearing group and use slender rollers. The family still includes different radial and axial constructions, not one interchangeable part.

Are loose needle pins a complete bearing?

No. Roller dimensions, grade, end profile, quantity, cage and raceway design all matter. A bag of similarly sized rollers does not verify an assembled bearing.

Do needle bearings need grease?

They need the lubrication specified for the design and duty; some arrangements use oil rather than grease. Assembly grease used to retain loose rollers is not automatically the required service lubricant.

Can I replace a needle bearing with a bushing?

That changes rolling contact to sliding contact and can alter clearance, lubrication, friction and load capacity. Matching dimensions alone does not approve the redesign.

Inch-series examples: keep the series prefix

An inch-series name is not a rounded metric size. The following IKO catalogue examples show why a shared numerical portion is insufficient identification.

IKO modelFw×D×C (mm)Nominal inch envelope
BA 1616 Z25.400×31.750×25.401×1¼×1
BHA 1616 Z25.400×33.338×25.401×1⁵⁄₁₆×1

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Basis: IKO Shell Type Needle Roller Bearings, printed pages B37–B38. BHA is the heavier series here. Neither row establishes an interchange with another maker's B1616, BH1616 or SCE designation.

How to measure a thin cup without inventing its tolerance

A loose thin cup is not a reliable basis for judging the final running bore. IKO specifies a gauge-ring and plug/taper-gauge method for its shell bearings because the cup can deform. Its measurement method must not be replaced with a loose caliper reading and a guessed clearance.

  1. Use the marking and nominal chart to identify candidates; record measurement uncertainty and wear.
  2. Obtain the exact bearing's housing, shaft and gauging instructions.
  3. Separate nominal dimensions from manufacturing tolerances and installed clearance.
  4. Check the installed assembly using the specified method. Housing material and support are part of the fit decision.

The chart above is not a universal housing tolerance, shaft tolerance or press-fit recommendation.

Turn a size match into a useful comparison record

Leave unknown fields visibly unknown. For example, a B1616 query must not silently become an IKO BA 1616 Z record; the similar number is a lead for research, not a verified relationship. Likewise, a matching HK envelope does not settle a vehicle or machine fitment.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Do HK 1210 and HK 1212 share the same outside diameter?

Not in the SKF catalogue rows shown here: the listed outside diameters are 16 mm and 18 mm. Do not infer an envelope from the shared 12 alone.

Does the equal HK 2020 and HK 2020.2RS envelope prove interchangeability?

No. The selected SKF rows share nominal dimensions, but construction, ratings and the actual application still require checking.

Is BA 1616 Z the same size as BHA 1616 Z?

The IKO examples have equal roller-set bore and width but different outside diameters: 31.750 mm and 33.338 mm.

Can a loose-cup measurement prove the installed clearance?

No. Thin-cup deformation and the housing fit affect the installed condition. Use the specified gauging and mounting procedure.
