Cylindrical roller bearings: types, dimensions & brand filters

Rib arrangement determines axial location: NU, N, NJ and NUP are not functionally identical.

What is this bearing type?

Cylindrical roller bearings use cylindrical rollers to carry primarily radial load. The ring ribs determine whether the bearing permits axial displacement or locates the shaft. NU, N, NJ and NUP therefore describe a functional difference, not merely a spelling variation.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
NU / NCommon non-locating arrangements allow relative axial displacement.Verify which ring is ribless and how the shaft is located elsewhere.
NJSupports axial location in one direction within design limits.Do not assume it locates the shaft in both directions.
NUP / NHLocating arrangements include additional rib/collar features; NH uses NJ with an HJ collar.Retain every assembly component when identifying the replacement.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Caged and full-complement designs trade different load and speed capabilities. Full complement adds rollers but does not retain the same high-speed capability as an otherwise comparable caged design. Multi-row versions need their own identification.

What the family name cannot tell you

Axial capacity is not the same as radial capacity and cannot be inferred from the bore. A dimensionally similar NU and NJ may perform different jobs in a shaft arrangement.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Record rib arrangement and locating/non-locating role.
  2. Check cage/full-complement construction and any loose collar.
  3. Compare axial displacement, allowable loads and lubrication conditions in the exact record.

Detailed identification & selection

Cylindrical roller bearing types, axial location and operating checks

The important choice is not just roller versus ball. Identify the rib arrangement, number of rows and cage construction, then check whether the bearing must locate the shaft or allow thermal movement.

N, NU, NJ, NF, NUP and NH compared

The following describes common single-row constructions in the cited manufacturer references. All still require their own permitted load and displacement limits.

TypeRib / collar arrangementAxial function
NUTwo outer-ring ribs; no inner-ring ribsNon-locating: permits relative axial movement.
NTwo inner-ring ribs; no outer-ring ribsNon-locating: permits relative axial movement.
NJTwo outer-ring ribs and one inner-ring ribCan react a limited axial load in one direction.
NFTwo inner-ring ribs and one outer-ring ribCan react a limited axial load in one direction.
NUPTwo outer-ring ribs; inner ring with one integral rib and a loose ribLocates in both axial directions within design limits.
NH (NSK reference)NJ bearing combined with an HJ thrust collarLocating assembly: the collar belongs in its identification.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

A shaft's thermal expansion needs a deliberate path. Equal dimensions do not make an NU a functional substitute for an NJ or NUP. Keep loose collars with the correct assembly.

Single row, double row, four row and full complement

Row count and cage type are independent fields: a double-row bearing can also be a full-complement design. Record both instead of treating 'double row' as a complete specification.

ConstructionWhy it is consideredSelection boundary
Single rowA compact radial support with a chosen axial functionRead the exact N/NU/NJ/NUP-type construction.
Double row — NN / NNU examplesHigh radial rigidity, including precision-machine spindle applicationsCheck bore form, clearance, accuracy and installation method.
Four rowHigh radial-load arrangements, especially rolling-mill roll necksNot four loose single-row bearings; retain the complete assembly and service instructions.
Full complementAdditional rollers without a cage favour load capacityThe speed capability is not that of an otherwise comparable caged bearing.

Applications, advantages and high-speed limits

Cylindrical rollers provide line contact and strong radial support. Separable rings simplify many mounting arrangements. The trade-off is that axial behaviour depends on the ribs; a high radial rating does not supply a matching axial rating.

A high-speed search must retain the cage, lubrication, load and precision conditions. 'Full complement', 'high load' and 'high speed' cannot be combined into one assumed specification.

Split and sealed cylindrical designs

A split cylindrical roller bearing is a purpose-designed split assembly for locations where axial access is difficult. It is not a standard ring that may be cut in half. Keep the bearing, cartridge, housing and seals within the documented split-unit system.

Many ordinary separable cylindrical bearings are open. Special sheave-duty and other documented sealed designs also exist. 'Cylindrical' alone therefore proves neither that seals are present nor that a bearing is sealed for life.

Timken's split-unit reference describes access and maintenance benefits, not permission to substitute an unspecified housed unit. The unit's mounting and operating limits still govern.

Clearance and lubrication are separate from the type code

NUP explains an arrangement; C3 describes a clearance group. Neither code supplies the finished shaft fit, an allowable axial force or a lubricant specification. Fit and operating temperature can change the installed clearance.

For a clearance-chart request, first identify the bearing design, bore range and required clearance class. Use the exact manufacturer's applicable numerical table. No universal micrometre range is inferred from this family overview.

  1. Record the full code, bore form, cage and clearance designation.
  2. Keep unmounted, mounted and operating clearance distinct.
  3. Check grease or oil, replenishment route, speed and thermal conditions together.
  4. When comparing load or speed figures, preserve their units and lubrication conditions rather than copying a larger number from another variant.

Assembly and ring identification

Separability does not mean arbitrary ring interchange. NSK distinguishes interchangeable constructions from sets that must remain as supplied. Keep the original identities unless the exact catalogue explicitly permits mixing the relevant components.

  1. Isolate the machine and label the inner ring, roller assembly and any loose rib or collar.
  2. Inspect shaft and housing seats and identify the specified fit for each ring.
  3. Where the design permits, mount the rings separately with the correct tools.
  4. Align the rings carefully before bringing the roller assembly together; do not force a misaligned assembly over a roller edge.
  5. Confirm the locating direction or permitted axial movement, lubrication path and required installed clearance.

Do not replace a missing collar with a visually similar washer. Mounting force, heat limits and fit tolerances require the exact bearing and machine instructions.

Cylindrical roller versus ball or needle bearing

'Cylindrical ball bearing' mixes two rolling-element names. A cylindrical roller bearing contains rollers; a ball bearing contains balls. A needle bearing uses slender rollers and usually addresses a different radial-space and raceway problem.

For a fair comparison, start with available space, radial and axial duty, speed, stiffness and the shaft support arrangement. A higher radial rating cannot compensate for an incorrect locating function. Use the exact product records to compare dimensions and documented limits.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Can an NU bearing take thrust?

A normal NU arrangement is non-locating; do not assign it an axial locating role. Use the exact design and support arrangement to identify where thrust is reacted.

Is full complement always better?

No. More rollers favour radial capacity, but removal of the cage changes the operating trade-off. The required speed, lubrication and duty can make a caged design preferable.

Does NUP mean a complete bearing without loose parts?

Not necessarily: the common NUP construction includes a loose rib. Preserve the complete assembly when identifying and comparing it.

Are all double-row cylindrical bearings tapered bore?

No. Bore form is a separate specification. Do not infer a tapered mounting seat from row count alone.

Read the width symbol: B, T and H are not interchangeable labels. For a tapered pair use assembly T, not the cone width. Needle designs without an inner ring may use roller-set bore Fw instead of d and are outside this d/D chart. Matched sets, housings and loose cups/cones are also excluded.
