Single row, double row and radial ball bearings

TermWhat it identifiesWhat it does not establish
Single-row deep grooveOne ball row with grooved ring racewaysThe closure, grease, accuracy, clearance or permitted speed
Double-row deep grooveTwo ball rows in a deep-groove arrangementSelf-alignment or a drop-in replacement for two separate bearings
Radial ball bearingA broad load-direction category that includes deep-groove and other ball-bearing constructionsThat the bearing can carry only radial force
Double-row angular contactA different contact geometry and arrangementThe same behaviour as double-row deep groove merely because both have two rows
Self-aligning ball bearingA construction with a spherical outer-ring racewayThat an ordinary double-row deep-groove bearing can accommodate the same misalignment

NSK's double-row deep-groove guidance explicitly excludes applications requiring angular misalignment compensation. Identify the actual structure before choosing a family or comparing sizes.

Can a radial deep-groove bearing carry axial or thrust load?

Ordinary deep-groove ball bearings can support radial load and axial load in either direction within their design limits. The statement that every radial ball bearing supports only radial load is therefore incorrect. A dedicated thrust bearing remains a different construction.

Do not use a single percentage of radial capacity as a universal axial limit. Row arrangement, internal clearance, filling slots and the manufacturer's calculation method change the answer. Basic dynamic rating C is not an allowable working load for every operating case.

A deep-groove bearing is not specified by the same fixed nominal contact-angle selection used for an angular-contact series. Its loaded contact geometry depends on the internal geometry, clearance and applied loads; do not assign every deep-groove bearing a 15°, 25° or 40° angle.

Seals, shields, snap rings and flanges solve different problems

FeaturePurpose to checkRecord before comparison
Open bearingExternal lubrication and contamination-control arrangementLubricant supply, housing seals and operating environment
Shield or sealProtection and lubricant retention with design-specific friction and speed limitsExact suffix, one or both sides, contact type and factory lubricant
Snap-ring groove / snap ringAxial location at the outer ring when used in the intended assemblyGroove dimensions and whether the ring itself is included
Integral flangeA projecting locating feature on the outer ringFlange diameter and thickness in addition to d×D×B
Filling slot / maximum-capacity constructionA construction accommodating additional ballsAxial-load and speed restrictions for that particular design

A snap ring is not a bearing seal, and a groove-only version is not the same component scope as a version supplied with a ring. Likewise, two bearings with the same d×D×B can differ in flange or groove geometry.

Advantages, limitations and application checks

NeedWhy this family may be consideredCheck before selecting a model
General shaft supportCommon radial rolling-bearing arrangement with axial support within its limitsActual radial/axial loads, support arrangement and required life
Electric motor or fanLow-friction designs and closure choices can suit rotating equipmentSpeed conditions, grease, temperature, noise requirements and electrical damage risk
Space-constrained supportThin-section and miniature variants existVerify the exact radial section, stiffness and capacity rather than choosing by bore alone
Corrosive environmentStainless and other material variants existMaterial, seals and lubricant compatibility; stainless is not universal chemical resistance
Misaligned shaft or housingA general deep-groove design is not a self-aligning solutionIdentify deflection and alignment requirements before selecting a different construction

Clearance, preload and tolerances are separate specifications

C3 identifies a clearance class; it is not an ABEC or precision grade. Shaft and housing fits and temperature differences can reduce the running clearance, so the unmounted catalogue clearance is not the final operating value.

Preload intentionally removes clearance and creates an internal load. It is not a generic remedy for noise or play. Use the equipment's arrangement and bearing-specific method; the size table cannot supply a universal preload force.

Boundary dimensions, dimensional/running accuracy and shaft/housing fit tolerances answer different questions. Keep the full precision and clearance suffixes when comparing similarly sized models.

How to use the deep-groove dimension chart

  1. Identify a complete bearing rather than a loose ball, a separate ring or a housing.
  2. Filter by brand, recorded row count and the named dimensions: d is bore, D is outside diameter, and B is width, all in millimetres.
  3. Open the complete product record to check closure, clearance, precision, load ratings and the original dimension labels.
  4. For a 12 mm shaft query, start with d = 12 mm, then establish the shaft fit and required D and B. Nominal bore equality alone does not approve the fit.

This is the verified subset currently loaded in BearingScope, not a manufacturer's complete or certified catalogue. Missing row counts stay unreported. For an official catalogue or drawing, check the exact model's document availability; this web table is not a substitute for an approved drawing.

Deep groove selection questions

Is a deep groove ball bearing the same as any ball bearing?

No. Ball bearing describes the rolling-element type. Deep-groove, angular-contact, self-aligning and thrust ball bearings differ in raceways, load directions and arrangements.

Is a deep groove roller bearing the same thing?

The phrase mixes two constructions. A deep-groove ball bearing uses balls; identify the intended roller-bearing family separately if the rolling elements are rollers.

Does double row mean twice the single-row load rating?

No. Use the exact model's published ratings and geometry. Two rows do not justify multiplying another bearing's rating or treating the arrangement as interchangeable.

Can I obtain CAD or the official catalogue PDF here?

Only a verified, permitted and exact-matching document may be provided. The product record and drawings lookup state availability; no unverified PDF or invented CAD is supplied.

Why do some table rows have no row count?

Their dimensions are supported by stored manufacturer fields, but an explicit row-count field or unambiguous manufacturer construction description was not recorded. They are not silently classified as single row.

Structure · function · identification

What is this bearing type?

A deep groove ball bearing guides balls between grooved inner and outer rings. It is a radial bearing that can also carry axial load in either direction within the limits of the exact design. “Ball bearing” is a broader term: angular contact, self-aligning and thrust ball bearings are different structures.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
Rings and racewaysThe inner and outer grooves guide the balls.Check the complete bearing, not a loose ball diameter.
Balls and cageThe balls transmit load; a cage separates them in caged designs.Cage design is part of the exact variant.
ClosuresOpen, shielded and sealed forms are available.A seal or shield suffix changes the specification, not just the name.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Single-row, double-row, miniature and maximum-capacity filling-slot designs are not one interchangeable construction. Filling slots affect allowable axial loading; do not transfer ordinary single-row assumptions to every variant.

What the family name cannot tell you

This family name does not establish a permissible speed, load, temperature or misalignment angle. A 608 search can contain several closures, clearances and materials with the same nominal envelope.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Read the full ring marking and retain every suffix.
  2. Use the model table below to inspect recorded dimensions, closure, clearance and precision.
  3. Compare dynamic/static ratings and the specified lubrication and speed conditions before selecting a candidate.

Read the width symbol: B, T and H are not interchangeable labels. For a tapered pair use assembly T, not the cone width. Needle designs without an inner ring may use roller-set bore Fw instead of d and are outside this d/D chart. Matched sets, housings and loose cups/cones are also excluded. Open the full product to check drawings, ratings, seals, clearance and precision.

Snapshot 2026-10-02. Every row keeps its actual product link and source-reported units; missing or ambiguous geometry is withheld. Equal nominal size alone does not approve replacement. Inch display is a conversion, rounded to six decimals, not an inch-series classification.
