Sleeves, seals & bearing accessories: types, dimensions & brand filters
Mounting and sealing components have their own geometry and mating requirements.
On this page7 sections ⌄
What is this bearing type?
Bearing accessories include mounting sleeves, locknuts, retaining devices, seals and separate race washers. These parts perform different jobs; an accessory record must not be interpreted as a complete rolling bearing.
| Part or design | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Adapter / withdrawal sleeves | Locate tapered-bore bearings on cylindrical shafts. | Match the sleeve, bearing bore/taper and shaft arrangement. |
| Locknuts and retainers | Locate or secure components; retainers prevent the intended nut from loosening. | Check thread and compatible locking device. |
| Seals and race washers | Seals retain lubricant or exclude contamination; race washers provide specified rolling surfaces. | They are not interchangeable simply because their diameters match. |

Variants that change the answer
Precision locknuts, mounting nuts and withdrawal-related parts can have different functions. A separate washer or rolling-element assembly needs the matching adjacent components.
What the family name cannot tell you
Do not assign a bearing load rating, speed or ABEC class to a nut or seal. Component dimensions retain their drawing labels rather than being forced into d×D×B.
Identify the exact part before comparing
- Identify the component function and complete designation.
- Record the mating bearing, shaft/thread and assembly location.
- Use the documented combination; keep unknown compatibility as a data gap.

Bearing sleeves, locknuts and washers: identify the mounting system
Accessories are part of a specific mounting arrangement. Match the bearing, shaft, sleeve and locking method together. A similar nut diameter or a shared bearing number is not enough to establish a compatible assembly.
Adapter sleeve, withdrawal sleeve, bush and repair sleeve
| Term | Function | Do not confuse with |
|---|---|---|
| Adapter sleeve | Mounts a suitable tapered-bore bearing on a cylindrical shaft | A plain bearing whose inner surface is the working sliding interface. |
| Withdrawal sleeve | A mounting sleeve for a suitable tapered-bore arrangement with its own assembly/removal method | An interchangeable adapter sleeve. |
| Bearing bush / sleeve bearing | A sliding bearing component | A mounting adapter selected only by shaft size. |
| Shaft repair sleeve | A repair component for a specified working surface | A generic bearing adapter or a cure for every worn raceway. |
| Spacer sleeve | Controls separation or assembly location | A tapered clamping sleeve. |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
Shaft diameter is not the bearing's tapered-bore designation
Keep the drawing symbols beside the values. For the H-series examples below, d1 is the cylindrical shaft diameter, d is the listed bearing-side dimension, B1 is sleeve width and G the thread. Do not interpret a taper as one constant outside diameter along its entire length.
A search such as '22211 sleeve' lacks enough information unless the complete bearing variant and mounting arrangement are known. Cylindrical-bore and tapered-bore variants cannot be silently treated as the same part.
SKF H311, H312 and H315 adapter-sleeve examples
| SKF sleeve | d1 / d / B1 (mm) | G | Listed nut / washer |
|---|---|---|---|
| H 311 | 50 / 55 / 45 | M55×2 | KM 11 / MB 11 |
| H 312 | 55 / 60 / 47 | M60×2 | KM 12 / MB 12 |
| H 315 | 65 / 75 / 55 | M75×2 | KM 15 / MB 15 |

SKF Rolling Bearings, printed 1072. These are standard H examples; an E variant uses a different locking arrangement. Confirm the full drawing and current component specification.
Verified catalogue pairings retain the bearing suffix
| SKF bearing | SKF sleeve | Assembly shaft d1 (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 22211 EK | H 311 | 50 |
| 22212 EK | H 312 | 55 |
| 22311 EK | H 2311 | 50 |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
SKF Rolling Bearings, printed 824. The 50 mm assembly shaft is not the bare bearing's bore. The 22211 and 22311 examples do not use the same sleeve. These rows do not approve other suffixes or other brands.
Locknut and locking-device types
Identify how the nut is secured after adjustment. A tab washer, locking plate and integral locking device are different systems; a missing washer must not be replaced by extra tightening. Precision spindle or lead-screw nuts can also have requirements beyond an ordinary locating nut.
Record the full thread including pitch and handedness, nut width, seating face, locking device and available tool access. A slotted circular nut's outside diameter alone does not identify its thread.
SKF KM thread, washer and spanner examples
| Nut | Thread G | Nut OD / width (mm) | Washer / hook spanner |
|---|---|---|---|
| KM 5 | M25×1.5 | 38 / 7 | MB 5 / HN 5-6 |
| KM 11 | M55×2 | 75 / 11 | MB 11 / HN 10-11 |
| KM 12 | M60×2 | 80 / 11 | MB 12 / HN 12-13 |
| KM 15 | M75×2 | 98 / 13 | MB 15 / HN 15 |

SKF Rolling Bearings, printed 1104. This identifies listed tools and nominal geometry, not a tightening-torque chart. A nut's static axial capacity is not a torque value.
Mounting: measure the specified result, not just wrench effort
Schaeffler's mounting guidance distinguishes wrench tightening from verification of the required bearing mounting condition. Torque alone is not a universal measurement of internal-clearance reduction.
- Identify the full bearing, taper, sleeve, nut and locking-device specification.
- Record the required mounting method and initial condition before applying force.
- Check the shaft, seating faces and threads; reject damaged parts under the assembly's criteria.
- Use the bearing maker's specified drive-up, clearance reduction or other controlled mounting method.
- Follow any explicit torque instruction for the exact component, but do not invent one from a generic nut chart.
- Install and verify the correct locking device, then complete the machine's commissioning checks.
Withdrawal, removal and hydraulic tools
Removal depends on which component is being released and how the assembly is retained. Identify the sleeve's extraction thread and access before selecting a nut or puller. Do not assume that the mounting nut and removal nut are always the same supplied component.
Hydraulic nuts and oil-injection equipment require a rated, compatible procedure and control of stored pressure. They are mounting/removal tools, not permission to apply unrestricted force. Isolate and support the machine and obtain the exact procedure before loading the tool.
Wheel-hub nut torque, clutch release sleeves and vehicle-specific pullers are separate demands. The H/KM tables do not supply those specifications.
Questions to settle before selecting a model
Is an adapter sleeve a bearing?
It is a mounting accessory, not the working rolling or sliding bearing itself. Its selection depends on the complete bearing and shaft arrangement.
Does H311 fit every bearing numbered 22211?
No. The verified row is SKF 22211 EK with H 311. Check the complete variant, taper and mounting arrangement; do not discard suffixes.
What torque should I use for a KM locknut?
The nominal thread and tool table does not establish a universal torque. Use the exact assembly's mounting and locking instructions, including the specified verification method.
Can I replace a lock washer with thread adhesive?
Do not change the locking system without an approved assembly instruction. Washer, plate and integral locking designs have different requirements.
