One-way clutches & freewheels: types, dimensions & brand filters
Overrunning or indexing devices transmit torque in one direction; they may need separate support bearings.

What is this bearing type?
A one-way clutch or freewheel transmits torque in one relative direction and overruns in the other. Overrunning, indexing and backstop functions are related uses, but impose different operating requirements.
| Part or design | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sprag or roller-ramp mechanism | Engages between the races to transmit torque in the locking direction. | Identify the mechanism and locking direction. |
| Races and connections | Transfer torque to the shaft and housing. | Compare the connection and complete assembly. |
| Support bearings, if supplied | Some self-contained designs include separate bearing support. | Do not assume every one-way clutch supports radial or axial machine loads. |

Variants that change the answer
Overrunning decouples a faster driven member; indexing converts repeated motion into intermittent rotation; a backstop prevents reverse movement. The same size is not proof of suitability for all three.
What the family name cannot tell you
Torque, overrun speed, engagement frequency and lubrication must be checked for the exact clutch. An ordinary rolling-bearing load rating does not specify a one-way clutch’s torque capacity.
Identify the exact part before comparing
- Describe the required function and permitted direction of rotation.
- Identify which member overruns and the torque/speed duty.
- Confirm support-bearing and lubricant requirements before comparing models.
