Thrust bearing size chart: model, direction and assembly height

Query 1,530 source-labelled models in 1,659 bearing or specified-seat configurations. Filter the shaft bore, outside envelope and complete height together. A housing-washer opening, one washer’s thickness or a roller diameter is not the same measurement.

Keep the shaft-washer bore distinct from the housing-washer opening. These ball-thrust records need separate radial support.

Filters update immediately. Dimensions match the envelope shown in each row; optional seat configurations are labelled separately and are not new catalogue part numbers. Changing construction clears dimension fields. Changing units converts valid inputs; inch results are conversions rounded to six decimals, not an inch-series classification.

1,137 configurations match. Showing 1–24.

Why apparently similar dimensions are kept separate
Shaft bore vs housing opening
The shaft washer locates on the shaft; the housing washer is a different component. The original symbol stays below each value. NSK double-direction rows use d2 for the actual shaft bore; the separate drawing dimension d must not replace it.
Complete height vs part thickness
H, T and indexed T symbols can describe different complete configurations across manufacturers. Read the row’s scope. A central washer thickness or a partial height in a drawing is not the complete assembly height.
With a separate seat washer
A sphered housing washer and an additional aligning seat washer are not the same part. The chart adds a separate configuration only when the source explicitly identifies the seat washer and gives its resulting outside envelope and height. The extra height is not calculated by adding component thicknesses.
Direction is about axial force
One-direction and both-direction describe axial load support, not clockwise versus counterclockwise rotation. Double direction is not a claim of double the load capacity.

Checks before using a dimensional candidate

  1. Match the complete marking, bearing construction and whether separate washers belong to the assembly. Do not identify an OEM kit by dimensions alone.
  2. Match the actual shaft bore, outside envelope and installed height. For a seat-washer configuration, check the named seat and mating spherical geometry.
  3. Open the product record for available ratings, speeds, chamfers and component dimensions. Confirm that load ratings are axial before using a calculation tool.
  4. Check minimum load, lubrication, fits, shoulders, retention and temperature with the applicable manufacturer instructions. Thrust ball bearings cannot supply the missing radial support.

Source-property snapshot 2026-10-03. The chart is an independent nominal-dimension reference, not a full catalogue, stock list, toleranced drawing or replacement approval. Separate washers/cages, combined radial/axial units, precision angular-contact assemblies and plain thrust pads need their own geometry. Rows without unambiguous manufacturer dimensions remain outside this chart. Construction guidance: NSK Thrust Ball Bearings and Bearing ABCs; dimensions and optional configurations: the retained manufacturer properties.

Structure · function · identification

What is this bearing type?

A thrust ball bearing supports axial load along the shaft. It is not designed to carry radial load. A single-direction assembly supports axial force in one direction; a double-direction assembly provides support in both directions.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
Shaft washerLocates on the shaft side of the assembly.Identify it separately from the housing washer.
Housing washerSupports the other side of the ball-and-cage assembly.Check the seat and support geometry.
Ball-and-cage assemblyOne assembly in single-direction designs; two in double-direction designs.Do not compare washer width with the assembled axial height.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Flat-seat and aligning-seat arrangements differ. A double-direction design has an intermediate shaft washer and two ball-and-cage assemblies; it is not created simply by reversing one single-direction bearing.

What the family name cannot tell you

Provide radial guidance through an appropriate separate support. The word “thrust” does not by itself specify the required minimum axial load or permissible speed.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Identify which way the axial force can act.
  2. Compare complete-assembly dimensions and the washer seats.
  3. Check minimum load, speed and lubrication against the exact catalogue entry.

Detailed identification & selection

Thrust ball bearings: load direction, washers, dimensions and selection

Thrust and axial load both mean force along the shaft. Identify whether the part is a ball thrust bearing, roller thrust assembly or a sliding thrust pad before comparing sizes or installation instructions.

Axial versus radial: what a thrust bearing does

Axial force acts parallel to the shaft axis; radial force acts across it. A thrust ball bearing transfers axial force between its shaft and housing washers through the balls. It does not provide radial support. Another appropriate support must carry the radial duty in the machine.

QuestionAnswerSelection implication
Axial or thrust? Two terms for the same load directionDo not create separate load cases merely because the names differ.
One direction or two?Direction refers to axial force, not rotationA shaft can reverse rotation without making a single-direction unit double-direction.
Both radial and axial load?Use a suitable combined-load arrangement or separate supportsAn ordinary thrust ball bearing alone is not a combined-load bearing.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Single direction, double direction and the washer stack

A shaft washer and a housing washer serve different interfaces even when they look similar. Their bores and seating requirements can differ. Keep raceway faces toward the balls and identify every washer from the assembly drawing.

ConstructionMain componentsAxial support
Single directionShaft washer, ball-and-cage assembly, housing washerOne axial direction.
Double directionCentral shaft washer, two ball-and-cage assemblies and two housing washersBoth axial directions.
Aligning-seat versionThe specified spherical/aligning seat componentsHelps accommodate mounting error within its documented scope.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

An aligning seat is not permission to impose radial load. Do not use a plain hardware washer as an unverified substitute for a bearing raceway washer.

Measure the complete d×D×T assembly

Record the shaft-washer bore d, housing-washer outside diameter D and complete assembled height T as named in the drawing. Measure the correct seated stack; one loose washer's thickness or a cage-only height is not the complete bearing height.

These are manufacturer-specific NSK reference records reviewed for this page. Ratings are axial basic ratings, not permitted working loads. The 25 mm bore shared by 51105 and 51205 does not make their envelopes interchangeable. All listed dimensions are nominal.

Flat seat, spherical seat and bearing-family alternatives

JTEKT lists 51100, 51200, 51300 and 51400 series with flat seats, 53200/53300/53400 with spherical seats, and the corresponding U-listed forms with aligning seat washers. These are series examples from that reference, not complete part numbers or universal suffix rules.

Installation direction and mounting checks

  1. Isolate and support the machine, then identify the direction and reversal of the axial load.
  2. Match the shaft washer, housing washer, cage and any aligning seat to the exact assembly drawing.
  3. Check which washer locates on the shaft and which on the housing; do not swap them by appearance.
  4. Check shoulders, seating faces, fit and the separate radial support. Avoid imposing unintended radial restraint on a thrust-only design.
  5. Apply the specified lubrication, retention and minimum-load provisions, then inspect the completed stack using the machine procedure.

This checklist does not supply a machine-specific fit, nut torque, preload or end-play setting. A car's 'thrust bearing' may mean an engine thrust surface, clutch release bearing or another component that needs a separate service procedure.

Load, speed, minimum load and lubrication

Selection requires the actual axial load, duty cycle, speed and lubricant. A basic dynamic or static rating is not a free-standing safe working load. Check the exact bearing's speed and minimum-load conditions together with the installation.

SKF's thrust-bearing reference relates required minimum load to bearing factors and speed. An unloaded or lightly loaded rotating bearing cannot be approved just because its main load rating is large. No numerical minimum is inferred here without the correct bearing factor and conditions.

  1. Separate continuous axial duty, reversals, starts and shock loads.
  2. Use the exact bearing's axial ratings and lubrication-specific speed limits.
  3. Check required minimum load and any specified spring or preload arrangement.
  4. Check temperature, lubricant delivery, cleanliness and expected service life without treating a calculated fatigue life as a guarantee.

Choose by the mechanism, not the application's nickname

Manufacturer application examples are starting points. They do not approve a thrust ball bearing for every bandsaw guide, washing machine kit, vehicle, turbocharger or propeller-shaft installation.

Thrust ball bearing numbers: distinguish direction and seat construction

Use the full marking before choosing a size. In the NSK E1103d (2025) catalogue, the three seat constructions below have separate designations and heights. A number with U includes the specified aligning seat washer; it is not the same envelope as the flat-seat bearing.

These are NSK catalogue series, not universal rules for every manufacturer. A family prefix identifies a construction, not a complete available model. Use the exact rows and linked model records below.

Example: 51200, 53200 and 53200U share a source row, but their complete dimensions are 10×26×11 mm, 10×26×11.6 mm and 10×28×13 mm respectively. Equal load ratings in that row do not make them directly interchangeable.

For the single-direction flat series, 51100, 51101, 51102 and 51103 have 10, 12, 15 and 17 mm bores. Do not extend that shortcut to double-direction numbers: 52202 has a 10 mm central-washer bore d2, while the separate d dimension in its drawing is 15 mm.

X qualifies washer geometry in these tables: the shaft/central washer outside diameter is smaller than the housing washer diameter. X does not mean an ABEC accuracy grade. Keep it in the marking.

Double-direction size chart: 60–190 mm central-washer bores

These are all 44 flat-seat entries within this bore range in the reviewed NSK tables. Dimensions are nominal millimetres. The chart is a reference, not a statement of stock or a universal catalogue of every brand.

Read the actual central shaft-washer bore d2 and complete height T1. The separate d dimension shown in the catalogue is not the bore. Double direction means support of axial force in either direction, not two times the listed capacity.

Flat seat, aligning seat and U assembly: compare the complete envelope

An aligning seat changes the housing interface. The U version includes the matching aligning seat washer, so use its total outside diameter and total height. The bearing alone and the seat-washer assembly must remain separate comparison candidates.

The corresponding ratings are read from a shared source row, but component geometry and mass are specific to each construction. A spherical seat does not provide radial capacity or an unlimited self-aligning capability.

Mounting and housing dimensions: what the catalogue does and does not specify

The mounting drawing distinguishes shaft and housing abutments from the bearing boundary dimensions. A maximum fillet radius controls interference at a corner; it is not an instruction to grind the raceway or a tolerance for the housing bore.

The single-direction tables list da minimum, Da maximum and ra maximum. The double-direction tables instead list Da, ra and rb; a missing shaft abutment value must not be invented from the single-direction row.

  1. Confirm the direction(s) of the actual axial reaction and provide suitable independent radial support.
  2. Identify each shaft washer, housing washer and cage from the exact assembly drawing. Do not swap washers by appearance.
  3. For an aligning-seat version, confirm the matching spherical seating arrangement and whether the U washer is included.
  4. Check the total height, both seating faces, shoulder and fillet references against the complete machine drawing.
  5. Obtain the applicable fits, minimum axial load, lubrication, retention and start-up checks before installation.

These are catalogue geometry examples, not a housing manufacturing drawing or a complete device repair procedure. No retaining torque, fitted clearance, preload force or minimum-load value is established by this table.

How to use the chart without turning a size match into a replacement claim

A 10 mm NSK 51100 is a small metric thrust bearing, not an inch-series 1/4 in bore bearing. Likewise, these industrial tables do not identify a similarly numbered wheel hub, clutch release bearing, banded assembly or an OEM machine repair kit.

Precision angular-contact thrust bearings, needle/roller thrust bearings and plain thrust pads use different structures and rating rules. They need their own source records rather than a renamed row from this ball-thrust chart.

  1. Match the complete bore, outside diameter and installed height, including any aligning seat washer.
  2. Confirm one-direction or two-direction axial support; clockwise/anticlockwise rotation is a separate matter.
  3. Compare Ca and C0a as axial ratings. Do not copy them into radial-rating fields or treat them as allowed service loads.
  4. Check the grease/oil limiting speeds against the actual lubrication method, load and heat balance.
  5. Check minimum axial load to prevent slippage. The reviewed table does not provide a numerical model-specific minimum.
  6. Check cage/version, seats, fits, retention and the separate radial support. A size match remains a candidate until the whole application is verified.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Can a thrust ball bearing take radial load?

No. This construction requires a separate appropriate radial support or a different combined-load bearing arrangement.

Which side faces the shaft?

Identify the shaft and housing washers from their marking and drawing; their bores and seats can differ. Do not choose by cosmetic appearance.

Does double direction mean clockwise and anticlockwise?

No. It means that axial load can be reacted in both directions along the shaft.

Is every thrust bearing a ball bearing?

No. Roller, needle, sliding-pad, fluid-film and magnetic thrust supports are different mechanisms. Use the correct family and machine instructions.

Source-labelled dimension chart

Look up real bearing dimensions

Choose a bearing structure, then enter the dimensions you know. You can leave unknown dimensions blank. The chart contains 29,253 catalogue records whose bore, outside diameter and width or height symbols have been checked against retained manufacturer properties. It is not a complete ISO standard or an interchange list.

Changing units converts entered values; it does not reinterpret 12.7 mm as 12.7 inches. Inch fractions such as 1/2 are accepted. A blank field means unknown, not zero.

Read the width symbol: B, T and H are not interchangeable labels. For a tapered pair use assembly T, not the cone width. Needle designs without an inner ring may use roller-set bore Fw instead of d and are outside this d/D chart. Matched sets, housings and loose cups/cones are also excluded. Reference basis & data limits

Manufacturer terminology is retained in the product records. Technical reference basis: JTEKT Basic Bearing Knowledge (boundary dimensions, tolerance classes and lubrication); NSK Bearing ABCs (lubrication, designations and clearance); NTN technical FAQs (closure codes and component interchange); SKF rolling-bearing selection and maintenance references.

Selection workflows and catalogue grouping are BearingScope editorial aids. Verify the current drawing and application requirements before using a candidate. Missing database information is not converted into an assumed match.
