Wheel-bearing grease: NLGI ratings, types & product comparison

Choose wheel-bearing grease from the hub specification and service conditions, not its colour or the word 'premium'. Compare documented automotive and marine examples, then check the exact assembly before use.

What to check

01

Start with the wheel end

A repackable tapered-bearing hub, a factory-sealed cartridge, an oil-bath hub and a semi-fluid-grease hub are different lubrication systems. This guide helps select and compare lubricant information; it is not a hub conversion or disassembly procedure.

02

What does 'best wheel-bearing grease' mean?

The useful choice is the product that meets the exact vehicle or axle specification under the actual temperature, water exposure and service conditions. The examples below are technical references, not a universal ranking or a promise of vehicle fitment.

Direct answer

For a serviceable automotive wheel bearing, first verify the required consistency, wheel-bearing performance category and exact OEM requirements. NLGI 2 describes consistency; GC describes an automotive wheel-bearing performance category. Neither a red colour, a lithium label nor a synthetic base oil is an approval by itself. A sealed-for-life hub must not be opened or injected merely to use one of these greases.

NLGI 2, GC and GC-LB answer different questions

Label or propertyHow to use it
NLGI 2A consistency grade. Two NLGI 2 greases can have different base-oil viscosities, thickeners and application limits.
GCThe NLGI automotive wheel-bearing performance category under ASTM D4950. Vehicle requirements can be more restrictive.
GC-LBA combined wheel-bearing and chassis performance claim. Verify the exact current product rather than treating every grease from that brand as certified.
EP or multipurposeA formulation or use description, not a complete wheel-bearing specification. Check the required category and product data.
High temperature / dropping pointA dropping-point test is not a continuous operating-temperature rating. A larger number is not a 'best grease' score.

A useful comparison records the grease name, data-sheet version, consistency, base-oil viscosity, thickener, relevant tests, service range and OEM requirement. Leave an unreported field unknown. Do not rank a wheel grease by one Timken load or four-ball test number: those are lubricant tests, not the load capacity or fatigue life of your installed bearing.

Four real grease examples — different evidence, different limits

Manufacturer descriptions below are a dated reference snapshot. These are candidates to investigate only when the assembly permits the stated lubricant type. The table does not establish interchange or mixing compatibility.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.

Exact productRecorded formulation / classificationManufacturer-described use and boundary
Mobil 1 Synthetic GreaseSynthetic base stocks; lithium-complex thickener; NLGI 2; GC-LB; redAutomotive applications including disc-brake wheel bearings. The source has inconsistent temperature-range statements, so this page does not assign it one resolved operating range.
Valvoline Multi-Vehicle High Temperature Red GreaseLithium complex; NLGI 2; GC-LB; EPAutomotive disc-brake wheel bearings and chassis applications. The reviewed page states 0 to 375 °F; this is that product's published range, not a hub temperature target.
Red Line CV-2 GreaseSynthetic fluid; non-soap thickener; NLGI 2; GC-LB; redThe manufacturer names both high-performance wheel bearings and CV joints. This specific dual-use product does not make every CV-joint grease suitable for wheel bearings.
Lucas Marine Grease — current pageOBCS (overbased calcium sulfonate); current page's stated formulationTrailer and automotive wheel bearings are named, with fresh- and salt-water protection. The current page explicitly excludes centralized dispensing systems. Do not copy the lithium-complex description from older catalogues into this current record.

Use the product name as precisely as a bearing designation. A similarly coloured tube, a different regional version or a renamed formulation needs its own evidence. BearingScope does not sell these products, provide a buying ranking, or certify them for an unidentified vehicle.

How to read measured grease properties without inventing a ranking

The following values belong only to the reviewed Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease product table. Retaining the test and condition makes the numbers usable as a reference.

Reported property / testPublished value
Base-oil viscosity at 40 °C — ASTM D445150 mm²/s
Worked penetration, 60 strokes — ASTM D217280 × 0.1 mm
Dropping point — ASTM D2265300 °C
Water washout at 79 °C — ASTM D12643 mass %
Low-temperature torque, 60 s at −40 °C — ASTM D46931 N·m

Compare another product only when the method, test temperature and reported quantity match. A washout percentage measured at another temperature cannot be ranked directly against this row. These laboratory values do not specify how much grease your hub needs or how long it can run between services.

Lithium, white lithium, synthetic, polyurea and moly

Is lithium grease good for wheel bearings? Some complete lithium-complex products are expressly intended for wheel bearings, as the examples show. 'Lithium' alone does not identify the performance class, viscosity or hub approval; simple lithium and lithium complex must not be silently treated as the same formulation.

Can I use white lithium or general-purpose grease? Check the exact label and product data. White is not a performance grade, and a general-purpose product without the required wheel-bearing specification has not been qualified by its colour or availability.

Is synthetic wheel-bearing grease better? Synthetic describes the base-fluid choice, not the whole specification. Mobil 1 and CV-2 provide real synthetic examples with different thickeners. Compare the required performance fields and service limits, not the word synthetic alone.

Can polyurea grease be used? Do not transfer an electric-motor grease instruction to a wheel end solely because both contain bearings. Verify that exact product's wheel-bearing suitability and the OEM requirements. This page does not provide a tested polyurea wheel-grease recommendation.

CV grease, moly grease or graphite grease? A sliding-joint or fifth-wheel lubricant is not automatically a wheel-bearing grease. The manufacturer describes CV-2 as containing organic moly and specifies that particular formulation for both CV joints and wheel bearings. Check the actual product; this is not blanket approval for molybdenum-disulfide or graphite greases.

Red, blue, green or white: colour is not a selection chart

Grease colour can come from its ingredients or added dye. It does not identify an NLGI grade, a wheel-bearing approval or a compatible mixture. Mobil 1 and CV-2 are both described as red, yet their documented thickener descriptions differ. Select by the complete product record, not a colour match.

A used grease that changes colour needs context: age, heat, contamination and the original appearance matter. A photograph alone cannot diagnose the grease or certify continued use. If there is water, metallic debris, overheating or damaged seals, investigate the wheel end under its service instructions rather than masking the symptom with a new colour of grease.

Car, RV, camper, caravan and travel-trailer bearings

Identify the axle and hub, not just the vehicle category. A towed RV can use an axle supplier's serviceable hub, while a motorhome's chassis can use a different wheel-end system. The word RV does not determine one lubricant, fill quantity or service interval.

Dexter's current bearing FAQ identifies a lithium-complex factory grease and warns against mixing it with several other thickener families. Its lubrication article names products such as Mystik JT-6 Hi-Temp Grease #2, Ronex MP and Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease among its grease sources. Treat this as evidence scoped to the applicable Dexter instructions, not approval for every trailer or every similarly named grease.

Match the exact axle documentation and current grease data. A grease fitting, an E-Z Lube spindle, a pressure cap and an oil cap are not interchangeable lubrication systems. New grease does not replace bearing inspection, correct adjustment or seal condition. Use the approved procedure or a qualified technician; no universal nut torque, number of gun strokes or repacking interval is assigned here.

Boat-trailer and marine wheel-bearing grease

For a serviceable boat-trailer wheel bearing, check wheel-bearing suitability together with water and corrosion performance. Salt-water exposure is a separate selection condition; 'waterproof' on a label does not make the complete hub waterproof or permit indefinite immersion.

Lucas Marine Grease is a concrete manufacturer-listed trailer-wheel-bearing example with fresh- and salt-water protection. Its current formulation description is OBCS; older lithium-complex descriptions must not be used to assume mixing compatibility. For a synthetic candidate, verify the exact marine-use evidence as well as wheel-bearing suitability: the word synthetic alone is insufficient.

Record whether the hub is approved for immersion, the seal arrangement, the exposure and the trailer's inspection/re-lubrication instructions. A low washout result cannot repair a leaking seal. There is no universal annual interval on this page; immersed service can need a different schedule from dry road service.

Disc brakes, high temperature, heavy duty and racing

For disc-brake service, use a product explicitly specified for the applicable wheel-bearing duty; Mobil 1 and the Valvoline example provide that type of manufacturer description. Do not apply wheel-bearing grease to a brake friction surface, and do not confuse it with grease specified for caliper hardware.

For a hot hub, first establish the actual temperature and cause. Brake drag, bearing adjustment, damaged parts and lubrication problems require different responses. A high dropping point does not authorize a damaged or overheated wheel end to remain in service.

'Heavy duty', 'high speed', 'low drag' and 'racing' are not interchangeable requirements. This page gives no measured comparative drag ranking or racing service life. A specialised racing application still needs the assembly, load, speed, temperature and service evidence; it is not selected by choosing the largest temperature number in an advert.

Mixing wheel-bearing greases: keep unknown compatibility unknown

Do not top up an unidentified grease merely because both products are NLGI 2, red, synthetic or GC-LB. Those labels answer different questions from mixture compatibility. Obtain the exact old and new product identities and the equipment-approved changeover procedure.

Dexter warns against mixing different grease types and requires removal of the old grease when changing types under its procedure. A general thickener chart is only a screening aid; this page does not supply tested pair-by-pair mixture approvals. Unknown mixtures remain unverified, including mixtures of the four products above.

Oil-bath and semi-fluid wheel ends are separate systems

An oil-bath hub must retain its specified oil grade, fill level and sealing arrangement. Dexter's oil-hub reference lists SAE 90, SAE 80W-90 and SAE 75W-90 in its stated scope; that list is not a conversion instruction or an oil recommendation for an unidentified hub.

Some heavy-vehicle wheel ends specify a semi-fluid consistency such as NLGI 00. Do not replace it with NLGI 2, or put semi-fluid grease into a design requiring another fill, without explicit wheel-end instructions. The bearing number alone does not establish the lubrication system.
