Tapered roller bearings: types, dimensions & brand filters

Cone and cup geometry determines the assembly; single-row bearings normally work in opposed arrangements.

What is this bearing type?

A tapered roller bearing has conical rollers and raceways. The cone is the inner-ring and roller assembly; the cup is the outer ring. A single-row bearing carries radial load and axial load in one direction, so shaft arrangements commonly use opposed bearings.

Part or designWhat it doesWhat to verify
ConeInner ring with rollers and cage.Keep its complete component number.
CupSeparable outer ring.A cone number alone may not identify the complete assembly.
Assembled width TEnvelope width of the specified cup-and-cone combination.Do not substitute cone width B or cup width C for T.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.

Variants that change the answer

Metric and inch-series designations can use different component-number conventions. Opposed arrangements require specified endplay or preload; the same nominal size does not establish the correct adjustment.

What the family name cannot tell you

A loose cone and a visually similar cup are not an approved pairing. Wheel, gearbox and other applications also need their own mounting and retention requirements.

Identify the exact part before comparing

  1. Read both cup and cone markings where applicable.
  2. Compare d, D and assembly T using the same component scope.
  3. Verify the documented pairing and application adjustment; do not infer a torque from the model number.

Detailed identification & selection

Tapered roller bearings: cup and cone, dimensions, pairing and setting

A tapered roller search must identify the complete assembly. A cone, cup or bearing set number can refer to different supplies, and the overall width is not necessarily either ring's width.

How a tapered roller bearing works

The rollers and ring raceways have conical geometry. Their load path supports radial force together with axial force in one direction in a normal single-row design. An opposed bearing or a documented multi-row arrangement handles the required reaction and opposite axial direction.

ComponentMeaningIdentification check
Cone assemblyInner ring with the rollers and cageRecord the complete cone marking, not only its shaft diameter.
CupOuter ring with its tapered racewayRecord the cup marking; a cup number is not a complete bearing number.
Complete unit or setThe specified cone/cup or multi-row combinationKeep the manufacturer's assembly identity and any matched components.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

'Tapered bore' describes a mounting hole. 'Tapered roller' describes the rolling element. A spherical roller bearing with a tapered bore is not a tapered roller bearing.

How to measure: d, D, T, B and C are different fields

Identify the full cone-and-cup assembly before measuring. Record the bore and outside diameter, then distinguish assembled overall width T from cone width B and cup width C. A loose cup's width cannot be used as the assembled bearing width.

FieldWhat it measuresNSK HR30205J reference
dBore diameter25 mm
DOutside diameter52 mm
TTotal assembled width16.25 mm
BInner-ring width15 mm
COuter-ring width13 mm

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

  1. Read both component markings and preserve suffixes and the brand.
  2. Use the manufacturer's drawing to identify the dimension faces; clean measuring surfaces first.
  3. Compare the complete nominal envelope 25×52×16.25 mm in this example, not 25×52×15 mm or 25×52×13 mm.
  4. Check chamfers, abutments and setting requirements separately. Nominal dimensions are not a shaft or housing tolerance.

This table is a specific NSK HR30205J example, not a statement that every 30205 variant shares all ratings or internal geometry. Inch-series cone and cup numbering also require their own catalogue identification.

Single row, opposed pairs, double row and four row

For face-to-face or back-to-back mounting, preserve the original contact-line orientation, shoulders and spacers. Pairing direction changes the support geometry; the outside appearance of a cup is not an adequate assembly instruction.

ArrangementPurposeDo not confuse it with
Single rowCombined radial load and axial force in one directionA complete shaft arrangement that reacts thrust both ways.
Opposed pairThe two rows react opposite axial directions; their position establishes settingTwo unrelated components that happen to fit the shaft.
Double-row assemblyA defined two-row bearing or assembled combinationAny two single-row bearings with similar overall width.
Four-row assemblyMulti-row support used in demanding roll-neck arrangementsFour independently replaceable loose bearings.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

End play, zero setting and preload

Setting describes the mounted pair's axial clearance or interference. End play allows measurable axial movement; preload establishes interference and rolling resistance; zero setting is the transition between them. 'No detectable play' by itself is not a measured preload value.

The cold assembly setting and the operating setting are different: temperature and deflection can change the result. The right assembly target therefore comes from the actual machine and bearing arrangement, not a universal nut torque.

ConditionWhat to establishWhat is not enough
End playSpecified axial movement, measured with the stated seating and measurement methodFeeling the shaft by hand.
PreloadThe specified force, displacement or controlled resistance methodTightening until rotation becomes stiff.
Operating settingThe intended condition under temperature and working loadsCopying another machine's cold setting.

On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Timken's setting reference distinguishes these states. It does not justify one generic adjustment value for wheels, gearboxes and spindles. Unknown target values remain unresolved inputs.

Tapered versus ball, cylindrical or spherical roller bearings

Tapered designs are useful in gearboxes and selected shaft, wheel and roll-neck supports where radial and axial loads coexist. A wheel or spindle is an application class, not a fitment approval. Select using the complete duty and assembly, rather than calling one family universally better.

Cylindrical rollerAxial location depends on the N/NU/NJ/NUP constructionA high radial rating does not prove equivalent thrust reaction.
Spherical rollerSelf-aligning raceway geometry addresses a different misalignment problemDo not infer equivalent alignment tolerance from two opposed tapered rows.

Before mounting, adjusting or removing a tapered assembly

  1. Isolate the equipment, support its load and identify both cup and cone plus any spacers or preset unit.
  2. Record the arrangement and the machine's required end play or preload before separating components.
  3. Inspect seats, shoulders and lubrication passages; obtain the correct pressing or extraction tools.
  4. Apply fitting force to the ring being fitted, not through the rollers. Keep rolling surfaces clean and components correctly aligned.
  5. Use the specified lubrication and seating procedure, then measure the target setting with the documented method.
  6. Secure the adjustment using the specified retention components and verify it again before controlled service.

This is a preparation and verification checklist. It does not replace a vehicle hub or machine manual, supply a missing torque, or approve mixing a used cup with a different cone.

Read precision, seals, units and suffixes independently

Metric and inch series, precision grades, seals, flanges and multi-row construction are separate attributes. A designation containing 'taper' can also describe a bicycle headset's frame interface or a tapered mounting bore; confirm the bearing structure before assigning it to this family.

For a miniature, sealed, ceramic or high-speed request, the family name is only the starting point. Timken's precision range includes matched components and application-specific setting methods; that does not give an ordinary industrial bearing the same precision or operating limits.

  1. Search the complete brand and designation in the records below.
  2. Keep all component identities and the correct d×D×T envelope.
  3. Compare documented ratings, speed/lubrication conditions and setting, retaining missing fields as unknown.
  4. Use an interchange candidate only after checking the machine requirements.

Questions to settle before selecting a model

Is a taper bearing a tapered ball bearing?

The common industrial family described here uses tapered rollers, not balls. A tapered headset or tapered bore can refer to a different feature; identify the full construction.

Can one single-row bearing take thrust both ways?

Do not assume that. A normal single row has a preferred axial reaction direction; the complete opposed or multi-row arrangement determines bidirectional support.

Can I tighten a tapered wheel bearing without a torque or setting specification?

Do not invent the adjustment. Obtain the applicable hub procedure, retention method and acceptance measurement. The correct method may specify more than nut torque alone.

Does equal bore and outside diameter prove interchange?

No. Total width, cup/cone pairing, contact geometry, abutments, ratings, setting and lubrication still matter.

Read the width symbol: B, T and H are not interchangeable labels. For a tapered pair use assembly T, not the cone width. Needle designs without an inner ring may use roller-set bore Fw instead of d and are outside this d/D chart. Matched sets, housings and loose cups/cones are also excluded.
