Grease vs oil bearing lubrication
Choose the lubrication system before choosing a product name.

What to check
System comparison
Grease often simplifies retention and housing design. A circulating-oil system can carry away heat and filter contamination, but needs delivery, return and sealing provisions.
Inputs to record
Record bearing type, speed, load, normal and starting temperatures, orientation, cleanliness and maintenance access. A catalogue limiting speed is not a substitute for a thermal check.
Do not swap in isolation
Changing grease to oil, or oil to grease, can require housing and seal changes. Keep the approved equipment lubrication specification with the product shortlist.
Direct answer
Start with the equipment's lubrication system, then compare the lubricant. Grease retains an oil supply near the contacts; an oil system can also provide controlled circulation and cooling. A bearing number alone does not tell you which system the surrounding machine was designed to use.
Bearing lubrication methods at a glance
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Method | How lubricant reaches the bearing | What the system must provide |
|---|---|---|
| Factory grease fill | Grease retained by the specified bearing closure | A verified replacement specification and service-life plan |
| Replenished grease | Metered fresh grease through an intended inlet | A route to the bearing and space or an outlet for displaced grease |
| Oil bath | Rolling elements encounter a maintained oil level | Correct level for the actual shaft arrangement |
| Drip or splash oil | Metered drops or moving parts distribute oil | Stable supply without oil accumulating excessively |
| Circulating oil | Pumped oil passes through the bearing and returns | Supply, return, filtration and cooling as required |
| Oil jet | A directed jet supplies the contact region | Approved nozzle geometry, delivery and drainage |
| Oil mist | A mist system delivers oil through its specified outlets | Mist generation, distribution and environmental controls |
| Oil-air | Metered oil is carried along a supply line by air | The specified air quality, oil dose and delivery path |
These are system categories, not interchangeable settings. An oil-air bearing remains oil-lubricated; it is not an air bearing. For grease versus oil, compare the complete housing, supply and return arrangement before considering a conversion.
Turn 'best bearing lubricant' into a usable specification
| Your recorded requirement | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|
| Bearing and duty | Full designation, load, speed and arrangement |
| Cold start and normal running | Viscosity and torque data at the relevant temperatures |
| Sealing and contamination | Water, dust, process chemicals and seal compatibility |
| Existing fill | Exact product and a supported changeover decision |
| Service access | Replenishment amount, interval and safe access |
Use a candidate only when the required fields are answered. A generic query such as 'ball bearing oil' cannot determine the oil grade for a particular spindle, motor or wheel end. A missing requirement is a missing selection input, not permission to use a household substitute.
Manual, single-point and central supply are different arrangements
A manual grease point serves one maintenance action. A single-point lubricator meters a supply at its own point. A central system feeds multiple intended points through lines and distribution components. None removes the need to verify that lubricant actually reaches the bearing.
Record each point, required lubricant, delivered quantity, operating period and discharge route. Check delivery and blockage monitoring under the equipment procedure. Reservoir capacity or pump pressure alone does not establish a correct bearing dose. Do not connect a sealed-for-life cartridge to a lubrication system without an approved design.
