Cleaning bearings before relubrication

Cleaning is a controlled maintenance operation, not a cure for damaged raceways.

Practical selection workflow

What to check

01

Identify a serviceable design

Follow the bearing and machine maintenance instructions. Factory-filled sealed bearings may be replacement items rather than candidates for solvent washing.

02

Protect materials and people

Use approved cleaning products and handling precautions compatible with seals, cage and lubricant. Keep debris out and do not spin an unlubricated bearing with compressed air.

03

Inspect before return to service

Look for corrosion, wear and damage under the approved inspection procedure. General-purpose penetrants or water-displacing sprays are not automatically the specified bearing lubricant.

Reference basis & data limits

Manufacturer terminology is retained in the product records. Technical reference basis: JTEKT Basic Bearing Knowledge (boundary dimensions, tolerance classes and lubrication); NSK Bearing ABCs (lubrication, designations and clearance); NTN technical FAQs (closure codes and component interchange); SKF rolling-bearing selection and maintenance references.
