High-temperature bearing lubrication checklist
Check the whole bearing system at temperature: lubricant, seals, cage, clearance and material stability.

What to check
Measure the relevant temperature
Ambient air temperature and bearing-ring temperature can be different. Capture continuous duty, short peaks, speed and the measurement location.
Do not use dropping point as service temperature
A grease dropping-point figure is not a promise of continuous bearing operation at that temperature. Use the product operating range and life guidance.
Recheck the bearing
Verify seal and cage limits, operating clearance and thermal expansion. A high-temperature grease does not upgrade the other components.
Direct answer
A grease's operating range and dropping point answer different questions. Use the operating recommendation for the exact formulation and check the bearing, seals and cage separately. A high dropping point does not approve running the complete assembly at that temperature.
Operating range versus dropping point: two real examples
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Product | Listed operating range | Listed dropping point | Correct use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SKF LGMT 2 | −30 to +120 °C | >180 °C | Compare the operating range, not 180 °C, with the required duty |
| SKF LGHP 2 | −40 to +150 °C | >240 °C | Do not interpret 240 °C as an assembly operating approval |
These are product-specific technical records. They do not set a universal bearing temperature limit or a guaranteed lubricant service interval. Keep short peaks, continuous temperature and the measurement location distinct.
Before choosing a higher-temperature grease
- Check whether the heat appeared after a dose, speed change, rebuild or change of lubricant.
- Verify the operating requirement against the whole bearing assembly, not only the grease label.
- Identify whether the lubrication system is intended to remove heat; changing grease alone does not add an oil-cooling circuit.
- Retain unresolved temperature or compatibility limits as a stop point in the selection, rather than extrapolating beyond the published range.
