Stainless & corrosion-resistant bearing selection
A stainless label does not establish compatibility with every chemical, washdown or marine exposure.

Stainless bearing materials and corrosion-resistant assemblies
Specify the bearing's structure and each material separately. Stainless, sealed and corrosion-resistant do not mean waterproof, suitable for every chemical, or interchangeable with the same-size steel bearing.
440C, 304 and 316: identify the component first
| Material or label | Where it may appear | What must not be assumed |
|---|---|---|
| 440C / equivalent martensitic stainless | Hardened bearing raceways and balls in documented NSK units | Not immunity to chloride attack or all cleaning chemicals |
| 304 / austenitic stainless | For example, flingers in NSK's documented stainless units | A 304 flinger does not establish 304 raceways |
| 316 / austenitic stainless | For example, housings in NSK's corrosion-resistant mounted range | A 316 housing does not make its insert a 316 bearing |
| 316 bearing rings and balls | Dedicated product designs with their own ratings | Do not copy the load and speed ratings of a 440C design |
| Stainless steel, grade not reported | An incomplete material description | Do not infer 440C, 304 or 316 from appearance or a generic prefix |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
NSK's mounted products illustrate mixed component specifications: a corrosion-resistant assembly can legitimately contain different stainless grades. This is why BearingScope keeps the original description instead of assigning a single alloy to every part.
Deep-groove, thrust, rod-end and mounted-unit searches
| Requested product | Dimensions and construction to capture |
|---|---|
| Deep-groove / sealed ball bearing | d×D×B, seal or shield, clearance and exact material |
| Angular-contact / thrust bearing | Contact arrangement or axial washers, orientation and assembly height |
| Needle / tapered / spherical roller | Roller structure, ring scope and full assembly designation |
| Rod end / spherical plain | Thread, handedness, articulation and sliding pair |
| Pillow block / two-bolt / four-bolt flange unit | Insert, housing alloy, mounting pattern, shaft locking and seals |
| Linear bearing / sleeve | Shaft or guide interface, raceway or sliding material and stroke |
| Hinge, swivel, drawer slide or lazy Susan | Hardware assembly identity; not an ordinary radial-bearing replacement |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
The searchable records below are the stainless products presently loaded with complete boundary dimensions. Absence of a requested structure is an evidence gap, not a claim that such products do not exist.
Wet, saltwater and chemical service
| Exposure | Record | Check before accepting a material |
|---|---|---|
| Condensation / occasional splash | Wet time, drainage and temperature cycles | Corrosion protection and lubricant retention |
| Saltwater / marine | Salinity, temperature, immersion duration and stagnant zones | Pitting/crevice-corrosion risk; no blanket marine approval |
| Washdown / food equipment | Cleaning chemical, concentration, pressure and rinse method | Seal arrangement, housing drainage and lubricant requirements |
| Acid / alkali / process fluid | Exact chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure time | All wetted components, not just rings |
| Vacuum / clean process | Pressure, temperature, lubricant and cleanliness specification | A special corrosion-resistant range may be needed |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
SMB distinguishes 316's corrosion behaviour from its limited mechanical rating and warns about stagnant seawater. NSK offers several corrosion-resistant constructions for different environments; its guidance also states that integral seals cannot completely prevent water entry. Select a documented system, not the broadest material label.
Why can a stainless bearing corrode?
Start by identifying the actual corrosion location and material. A stainless housing can surround a different insert, and an apparently rust-resistant ring can still face an unsuitable chemical exposure. Record fluid, concentration, temperature and time rather than concluding that all stainless bearings are defective.
Inspect water entry, damaged seals, blocked drainage, stagnant pockets and lubricant condition. Photograph the location before cleaning. Corrosion damage, fretting and electrical damage are not interchangeable diagnoses; visible damage needs investigation before reuse.
Stainless steel vs ceramic bearings
| Question | Stainless bearing | Hybrid or full ceramic |
|---|---|---|
| What is metallic? | Identify every component and actual alloy | Hybrid rings remain metallic; full-ceramic rings differ |
| Corrosion selection | Use chemical and mechanical suitability together | Check cage, seals and exact ceramic composition as well |
| Load, speed and shock | Use ratings for the exact stainless product | Do not inherit those ratings from a same-size steel model |
| Lubrication and fit | Follow the specified lubricant and fits | Do not infer dry running or identical thermal fits |
| Evidence for replacement | Original drawing and complete designation | Same verification, plus material-change consequences |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally.
Use full stainless designations, not just the base number
SKF W 608 and W 608-2Z are both recorded at 8×22×7 mm, but the first is open and the second is shielded on both sides. W 6204-2Z is recorded at 20×47×14 mm. These examples identify actual loaded products; they do not establish that an unqualified 608 or 6204 is stainless.
Select a model below to inspect all retained technical fields. The description can confirm a stainless family while leaving the exact alloy or precision class unreported. Do not fill those gaps by decoding an unfamiliar S or W prefix across brands.
316 stainless-steel bearing sizes
130 source-listed references from SMB Bearings, checked 2026-10-03. This supplementary table is separate from the loaded manufacturer product records below. Dimensions are d×D×B in mm; these are complete radial ball bearings, not loose balls.
The S316 prefix identifies this source's 316 stainless range. Do not carry over the load, speed, precision or corrosion limits of a 440C, KS440 or generic S-prefixed bearing. Sealed references retain their complete 2PES suffix.

Read the whole variant, including its width
Use the full S316 reference when recording a candidate. Open and sealed entries are separate variants even when their dimensions agree. The table does not convert a 316 construction into an equivalent 440-grade bearing.
This is a dimension and construction lookup. Confirm the exact cage, closure, lubricant, clearance and duty limits before use. Empty results and unreported properties remain unknown, not zero.
What this table does not approve
- No automatic bicycle, vehicle, spindle or reel fitment is inferred from matching dimensions.
- No generic temperature or maximum-speed rating is applied across these references.
- No full-complement load or speed multiplier is inferred from a family-page note; obtain the exact construction's ratings.
- Source-table and linked-document dimension conflicts are withheld pending verification.

Questions to settle before selecting a model
Is a sealed stainless bearing waterproof?
No universal waterproof rating follows from those words. Integral closures, housing seals, pressure and exposure conditions must all be checked.
Is 316 always a better bearing material than 440C?
No. Corrosion resistance and mechanical suitability are different requirements. Use the actual product ratings and chemical conditions rather than ranking by alloy number alone.
Does a 316 housing mean 316 balls and raceways?
No. The NSK mounted-range example uses a 316 housing with a 440C-equivalent insert. Read the component specification.
Does NU 316 mean a stainless-steel grade?
No. In that search, 316 is part of a bearing designation. Do not classify NU 316 or NJ 304 as an alloy based on the number alone.

What to check
Record the environment
Specify chemicals, concentration, wet/dry cycles, temperature and cleaning procedure; material suitability depends on actual exposure.
Check every component
Ring and ball materials, cage, seals, lubricant and housing can have different limits. Corrosion resistance is a system requirement.
Verify recorded evidence
Use the material filter and complete drawing. Do not classify a shiny, coated or unlabelled bearing as stainless.

Technical reference basis: JTEKT Basic Bearing Knowledge (boundary dimensions, tolerance classes and lubrication); NSK Bearing ABCs (lubrication, designations and clearance); NTN technical FAQs (closure codes and component interchange); SKF rolling-bearing selection and maintenance references.
Selection workflows and catalogue grouping are BearingScope editorial aids. Verify the current drawing and application requirements before using a candidate. Missing database information is not converted into an assumed match.
