Insert bearings: types, dimensions & brand filters
Insert bearings commonly have extended inner rings and shaft-locking features for mounted units.

What is this bearing type?
An insert bearing is the bearing component used in a mounted unit. Many designs are based on single-row deep groove ball bearings with shaft-locking features and an extended inner ring. The insert and the complete housed unit are different catalogue items.
| Part or design | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Outer-ring profile | May be convex or cylindrical. | Match the intended housing seat. |
| Inner ring and lock | Set-screw, eccentric-collar and other variants differ. | Check ring extension, shaft size and locking method. |
| Sealing / lubrication | Relubricatable and non-relubricatable variants exist. | Keep the exact seal and lubricant arrangement visible. |

Variants that change the answer
A spherical outside surface on an insert is not the same as the internal raceway construction of a self-aligning ball bearing. The housing and insert must be evaluated as a matched system.
What the family name cannot tell you
A shared shaft diameter or basic number does not establish housing compatibility. The mounted unit also needs its own bolt pattern and centre-height checks.
Identify the exact part before comparing
- Search the insert designation separately from the housing designation.
- Compare outer-ring profile, ring widths and locking components.
- Check the complete unit drawing before treating the insert as an alternative.

Set screw, eccentric collar or adapter sleeve?
NSK lists all three options for Self-Lube inserts. Keep the locking system with the bearing identity. The word insert does not specify one universal shaft tolerance, screw torque or installation method.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Locking arrangement | Identify before comparing | Missing information is not a default |
|---|---|---|
| Set screw | Complete insert marking and screw arrangement | Required shaft condition and tightening specification |
| Eccentric locking collar | Matching collar and assembly instructions | The collar is not an optional substitute for another lock |
| Adapter sleeve | Tapered-bore insert and matching sleeve components | Sleeve identity, mounting procedure and adjustment |

Does Self-Lube mean that no relubrication is needed?
Not automatically. NSK describes its Self-Lube inserts as factory-filled, while its cast-iron units provide for grease relubrication. Factory lubrication and a lifetime no-maintenance claim are different things.
Record the actual insert, seals, grease arrangement and operating conditions before choosing an interval or lubricant. Do not infer grease compatibility from colour, or assume a fitting in a different housing reaches the insert correctly.
Can I fit any same-bore insert into my housing?
No. Verify the outer-ring profile, seat geometry, ring widths, locking parts and lubrication route for the documented combination.
Is a spherical outside surface a spherical roller bearing?
No. The outside profile used to seat an insert is a different feature from the bearing's internal rolling-element and raceway construction.

Keep insert, housing and complete-unit markings separately
Search these identities separately. If only a casting mark is legible, keep the missing insert identity unresolved. The mounted-unit page contains selected original catalogue examples that show why a housing reference alone is insufficient.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Record | Keep | What this prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Insert | Manufacturer, full number, bore and locking arrangement | Mistaking the bearing component for a complete housed unit |
| Housing | Casting/model marking and drawing dimensions | Selecting by shaft diameter while ignoring the seat and foot |
| Complete unit | Assembly designation and documented component list | Assuming that separately similar parts form an approved assembly |
