Bearing rust and corrosion: identify exposure and prevent recurrence

Corrosion is a surface condition to investigate, not an instruction to clean and reuse. Record where moisture or chemicals could enter and whether damage reaches rolling contacts. A stainless bearing is not automatically suitable for every chemical, immersion condition or washdown process.

Inspect the pattern, then test the explanation

Use the illustration to locate the kind of feature being discussed, not to certify the condition of a real part.

Rust / moisture corrosion

Corrosion can affect rings and rolling elements, sometimes across a surface and sometimes at repeated contact positions.

Checks & easily confused patterns

Evidence to investigate

Trace water or corrosive exposure, condensation, lubricant condition, handling and storage protection.

Do not infer from appearance alone

Colour and spacing are not conclusive. Removing staining does not restore a pitted rolling contact or establish that reuse is acceptable.

Technical basis: NSK Bearing Doctor, individual damage-type references. Original BearingScope illustrations and investigation prompts, reviewed 4 October 2026. Colour, shape and depth are illustrative; source snapshots are retained in the internal audit.

Observation is not diagnosis

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you

Observation or contextInterpretation to considerVerification needed
Rust after storagePackaging and condensation historyCheck whether the protective wrap was opened or damp.
Damage near a sealAn exposure path may existRecord seal condition, washdown direction and drain arrangements.
Marks at rolling-element spacingMore than one mechanism is possibleDistinguish corrosion from vibration-related fretting with inspection evidence.

A practical investigation sequence

01

Identify and record

Photograph before cleaning and record the affected surfaces. Keep the bearing orientation and exposure history with the images.

02

Check the context

Inspect lubricant for water contamination using an appropriate analysis method. Colour alone does not quantify water content.

03

Verify before acting

Check the exact seal and material specification, not only the word stainless or sealed. Document the actual chemical and temperature.

04

Keep the decision traceable

Assess the damaged bearing using the manufacturer's rejection criteria. Correct the ingress or storage condition before fitting a replacement.

Capture the information a model search cannot guess

Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
