Bearing storage and handling: preserve the original condition
Keep bearings in their protective packaging in a clean, dry, stable storage environment. Control moisture, contamination, shock and vibration. Shelf-life decisions depend on the manufacturer, packaging and lubricant; there is no single expiry period for every bearing.

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you
| Observation or context | Interpretation to consider | Verification needed |
|---|---|---|
| Opened or damaged packaging | Protection may have been lost | Record exposure and inspect before treating the item as new stock. |
| Temperature cycling | Condensation risk | Review actual storage conditions, not only the room's average temperature. |
| Standby equipment near vibration | Contact damage may develop without normal rotation | Follow the machine's storage and transport instructions. |
Plan the work safely
Identify and record
Keep the complete label and lot information with the bearing. Store so that heavy units cannot deform packaging or become a handling hazard.
Check the context
Separate unverified returns, used bearings and unopened stock. A clean appearance does not establish provenance or storage history.
Verify before acting
Record packaging-open date and unusual moisture or impact exposure. Do not remove preservative merely to inspect a bearing that is not yet needed.
Keep the decision traceable
Before use, verify the correct designation and any shelf-life or relubrication requirement for the exact product. Inspect suspect stock under a documented procedure.
Capture the information a model search cannot guess
Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
