Bearing contamination control: dust, water, washdown and clean handling
Contamination control combines the bearing closure, surrounding seals, lubricant handling and the machine environment. A 2RS or shielded designation alone does not establish immersion, pressure-wash or chemical resistance. Define the exposure before selecting a closure or material.

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you
| Observation or context | Interpretation to consider | Verification needed |
|---|---|---|
| Dust or abrasive particles | Solid contamination | Record particle source, cleaning method and potential entry paths. |
| Water or washdown | Liquid exposure | Record pressure, direction, duration, chemical and temperature. |
| Clean-room or vacuum duty | Special environment | Verify material, lubricant and outgassing requirements separately. |
A practical investigation sequence
Identify and record
Describe the actual environment in measurable terms instead of only calling it dirty, wet or harsh.
Check the context
Inspect the entire ingress path, including worn shaft surfaces and external seal arrangements. A bearing closure cannot correct every housing leak.
Verify before acting
Keep filling tools, storage containers and installation surfaces clean. Record lubricant identity and handling changes.
Keep the decision traceable
Use the existing seal and application guides to shortlist constructions, then verify the exact product's permitted exposure.
Capture the information a model search cannot guess
Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
