Conveyor Bearings: Pillow Blocks, Inserts & Pulley Supports

A conveyor includes several bearing duties: idlers, drive pulleys, tail pulleys and the drive motor. Start by identifying the position. A mounted unit, its insert and a standalone roller bearing are different components even when a shaft size overlaps.

Keep the evidence with the model shortlist

The models on this page illustrate bearing roles; they are not confirmed replacements for an unspecified machine. Keep the original complete marking, machine position, load and speed duty, temperature, lubricant and mounting arrangement together. Check the candidate's recorded values below and leave unreported parameters unknown.

Define the duty

What matters in this application

Position and forces

Separate idler load from drive/tail-pulley reactions and take-up tension. Include impact and start/stop loads.

Mounting interface

Record shaft size, locking method, base-to-shaft height, bolt spacing and housing footprint.

Environment

Determine dust, water, washdown chemicals and relubrication access. Standard seals do not imply hygienic or submersible service.

Choose an architecture

Which bearing structures make sense?

Pillow-block ball bearing units

A mounted-support starting point when the unit and housing ratings meet the duty.

Check first: Check housing/base strength and bolt arrangement in addition to the insert's capacity.

Replacement bearing inserts

Useful when a compatible housing can be retained after inspection.

Check first: Confirm outer seating geometry, locking method and full insert designation.

Spherical-roller pulley supports

Investigate for heavier pulley loads and alignment requirements.

Check first: Select the housing, seals, shaft fit and axial-location arrangement as a system.

Side by side

Compare the recorded specifications

Different sizes and bearing structures are shown for different duties. C and C₀ are catalogue load ratings, not permissible equipment loads. Limiting speed is not an approved operating speed.

From shortlist to specification

Work through the selection

  1. Identify the conveyor position, belt tensions, payload, impact conditions and support spacing.
  2. Calculate each support reaction rather than dividing belt payload equally between bearings.
  3. Choose a complete unit or engineered bearing/housing system and verify every mounting interface.
  4. Check life, shock/static safety, sealing and lubrication; inspect belt tracking and shaft retention after assembly.
Investigate before replacing

Symptoms worth checking

Insert turns on the shaft

Inspect shaft tolerance, locking method, installation torque and fretting.

Frequent contamination damage

Review sealing, purge practice, washdown exposure and housing protection.

Cracked housing or loose feet

Inspect support flatness, bolt loading, shock forces and the housing rating, not just the bearing rating.

Symptoms are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis. Isolate equipment safely and follow its maintenance procedures before inspection.

Have the original designation?

Common questions

Application questions, answered

Is UC205 the same as UCP205?

No. UC205 identifies an insert in this dataset, while UCP205 is a mounted pillow-block unit. Housing and mounting dimensions are additional requirements.

Why does the unit not show a simple d×D×B size?

A mounted housing has a footprint, shaft height and bolt pattern rather than the outer-ring envelope of a standalone bearing. The page shows the shaft diameter and points to the full unit record.

Can I use a standard unit for food-industry washdown?

Do not assume so. Check corrosion resistance, sealing, lubricant suitability and hygiene requirements for the particular line and cleaning process.
