Bearing wear and contamination: build an evidence checklist

Wear, scratches and debris need to be considered together with lubricant and sealing condition. A worn bearing may have increased movement, but a measured clearance must be compared with the correct bearing type, state and specification before drawing a conclusion.

Inspect the pattern, then test the explanation

Use the illustration to locate the kind of feature being discussed, not to certify the condition of a real part.

Wear / abrasive surface loss

Sliding can progressively deteriorate raceways, rolling elements, ribs or cage contact surfaces. Debris and lubrication problems may contribute.

Checks & easily confused patterns

Evidence to investigate

Check the affected surfaces together with sealing, cleanliness and lubricant evidence. Record changes before cleaning.

Do not infer from appearance alone

A bright surface alone does not quantify wear. Acceptable dimensions and reuse criteria require the exact component and its service specification.

A practical investigation sequence

01

Identify and record

Record the operating hours and trend rather than only the final condition. Keep changes in duty and maintenance in the same log.

02

Check the context

Collect lubricant and debris samples before washing parts. Use clean labelled containers and preserve their origin.

03

Verify before acting

Inspect contact surfaces, fits and sealing components. Do not assume that fresh grease removes contamination already embedded in damaged surfaces.

04

Keep the decision traceable

Correct the verified contamination route and inspect associated components before returning the assembly to service.

Capture the information a model search cannot guess

Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
