Trailer hub systems: E-Z Lube, Nev-R-Lube, caps and bearing protectors

A grease nipple on a trailer does not identify the lubrication system. Check whether it belongs to a spindle-fed E-Z Lube arrangement, a spring-loaded protector or another design. A sealed Nev-R-Lube cartridge is a different assembly and is not repacked like a loose tapered bearing.

Bearing Buddy and dust-cap sizes: measure the cap seat

Bearing Buddy's model-selection guidance uses the hub opening or removed cap's outside diameter, measured accurately. It gives 1980 and 1980A as examples for a 1.980-inch hub bore; 1980A adds a visual lubricant-level ring. That 1.980-inch dimension is not a bearing bore.

A cover over the protector serves a different purpose from the metal protector or hub cap. Keep those identities separate when searching for caps, dust covers, grease covers and protectors. A trailer brand alone does not establish the required cap fit.

How a genuine Bearing Buddy works, and what its indicator cannot prove

The manufacturer's design uses a spring-loaded piston to maintain slight pressure, stated as 3 psi, and includes pressure relief. Its level check uses piston movement; the visible piston or indicator position can change as trapped air leaves after initial filling.

For this identified product, grease enters through the fitting at the piston's centre. The maker's initial-fill reference is approximately 1/8 inch of outward piston movement. Check by pressing at the piston edge: the ability to rock it indicates the prescribed fill condition. Follow the model's preparation and recheck instructions, rather than pumping until an arbitrary grease quantity has been used.

That is a description of the identified product, not an endorsement of adding it to any hub. A moving indicator does not inspect raceways, certify the inner seal or set bearing endplay. Inspect a loose, leaking or detached protector and its hub fit before returning the assembly to service.

Before installing or removing a bearing protector

Bearing Buddy seats its press-fit product with a wood block and hammer. For removal, the maker describes alternating wood-block-assisted impacts on opposite sides to walk the protector out. Do not force an incorrectly sized unit.

Its threaded 1980T instruction instead specifies grease-resistant sealing compound on the threads and hand-tight installation. These are product-specific methods, not permission to modify hub bores, spindle nuts or retention hardware to fit an unknown part.

E-Z Lube versus Nev-R-Lube: service and conversion limits

Dexter's general FAQ still requires E-Z Lube bearing inspection at 12 months or 12,000 miles and seal replacement when the hub is removed. For Nev-R-Lube it specifies inspection at that interval without grease repacking. These are identified Dexter-system instructions, not schedules for every trailer.

Dexter explains that E-Z Lube needs specially machined spindle passages. Nev-R-Lube also has different spindle/hub geometry and wheel-offset restrictions. Do not treat either as a dust-cap-only conversion. Dexter's glossary excludes Nev-R-Lube from immersion service such as boat-trailer use.

Why one manufacturer's grease instructions cannot replace another's

Timken LV12 cautions against automatic wheel-end lubricators/protectors in its described arrangement, while Bearing Buddy publishes instructions for its own pressure-controlled system. These are different application scopes, not permission to choose whichever instruction is more convenient.

Retain the axle and hub maker's approved configuration. If the equipment instructions and an accessory instruction do not agree, compatibility is unresolved. Do not add an accessory, combine fill quantities or borrow an adjustment setting to close that gap.

Identify the protector, cover, piston or spindle seal first

A cover diameter is not a hub-bore measurement. A bearing cone number is not a complete protector specification. Likewise, a bearing-protector cap is not the same part as a spindle-lubrication rubber plug.

Bearing Buddy model and nominal hub-size reference

Measure the removed metal cap's fitting diameter or the hub opening with a suitable caliper, then verify the exact hub and protector specification. This table is an identification aid, not an interference-fit tolerance table. The millimetre column is our arithmetic conversion of the stated inch value, rounded to two decimals; it is not a corrected factory dimension.

For the base numbers below, the manufacturer's stainless page lists SS variants; 1980A-SS has the visual-level indicator. Except for 1968, the listed base numbers also appear on its chrome page. Chrome 1968 and model 1810 have conflicting entries, explained below.

Threaded protectors: do not press in a T model

A threaded model is not interchangeable with a press-fit model merely because the designation begins with the same digits. An oil-bath conversion statement for one named system is not permission to convert every oil-filled hub.

Conflicting sizes and rounded searches: why some fits remain unconfirmed

The chrome page repeats model 1810 with different inch values and gives chrome 1968 an inconsistent inch/mm pair. The stainless page's 1938SS millimetre value does not agree with 1.938 inches. The 2717 millimetre annotation also differs from 2.717×25.4. We do not turn those conflicts into an approved fit; check the physical component and a confirmed current factory record.

Queries such as 1.75, 1.78, 2 inch, 2.44, 2.5 or 2.72 are too rounded to establish a press fit. A nominal 50, 52, 62 or 63 mm search is also not an automatic model match. Keep the measured value and its uncertainty instead of selecting the nearest number.

Axle load rating, trailer brand, boat-trailer use or camper type does not identify the hub opening. The manufacturer's size-gauge card is a screening aid; a proper diameter measurement is more precise. Measure the part that actually fits the hub, not the removable cover.

17B, 19B and 23B cover compatibility

The manufacturer's Bra table gives model associations, not numeric cover diameters. Use this map for the named protector models; do not infer an unlisted variant from a similar outside measurement.

Spindle seal kit reference: keep the inner bearing and seal diameter together

The diameter here is the manufacturer's seal-diameter field, in inches. It is not the protector diameter or the spindle journal size. Kit numbers are retained exactly; no kit 6 is supplied in the current table. Retention hardware must remain compliant with the hub maker's instructions; this reference does not authorize modifying a nut or cotter pin.

Grease level, leaks and loose protectors: what to check next

For its own compatible system, Bearing Buddy specifies a multipurpose No. 2 lubricant and warns against mixing grease types. The axle and hub requirements still apply; a No. 2 consistency alone is not a universal grease specification. An overflow feature is not permission to ignore a leak or force grease past a seal.

A grease fitting and visible level indicator do not remove the need for bearing inspection, compatible seals or the axle maker's service schedule. Changing the protector alone is different from replacing and adjusting the wheel bearings. For the latter, use the linked repacking and adjustment references.

Plan the work safely

01

Identify and record

Identify the axle, hub and cap or protector independently. Record the maker's system name instead of calling every grease fitting 'E-Z Lube'.

02

Check the context

Confirm the permitted lubricant, filling method, seal requirements and immersion scope from that system's instructions. Check for damage or leakage before adding lubricant.

03

Verify before acting

For a genuine Bearing Buddy installation, inspect bearings, hub and seal condition first. Use the model's prescribed press-fit or threaded installation; an incorrectly fitting protector must not be forced into an unsuitable hub.

04

Keep the decision traceable

Record the lubricant and service observations. Lubricant level, bearing condition, adjustment and brake cleanliness are separate checks; one does not certify the others.

Capture the information a model search cannot guess

Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
