Bottom Bracket Bearing Service: Removal Tools, Presses, Grease & Checks

Identify the complete bottom bracket before choosing a puller, press or cleaning method. A press-fit cup, a replaceable cartridge inside a cup and a threaded assembly require different work. This reference helps select a documented tool and plan the work; it is not a universal bicycle-repair procedure.

Press-fit tool lookup: BBT-30.4, BBT-90.3 and BBP-1.2

These are Park Tool product scopes, not a statement that every bearing within the listed bore range can be removed by the same operation. Threaded and thread-together cups require their own tools. Reducers and internal sleeves can change what an extractor can reach.

ToolDocumented useBoundary to check
BBT-30.4Removal and installation bushings for many 30 mm-spindle press-fit systems, including BB30/PF30.Some internal sleeves obstruct the remover; a separate press is required for installation.
BBT-90.3Remover and bushings for many 22/24 mm-spindle press-fit assemblies, including PF41.Not a universal 19 mm BMX remover. Confirm engagement beyond adapters and covers.
RT-1Park's option for 25–28.99 mm spindle systems, including DUB, and certain 30 mm exceptions.Confirm the cup's construction; a diameter range alone is not permission to drive out a threaded unit.
BBP-1.2Installation press set; documented shell-width range 68–150 mm.Extraction requires the separate BBP-AOS kit; the press is not an extractor by itself.

What is special about the BBP-1.2 30 mm drift?

Park identifies the 2292-2 drift as requiring an additional drift between it and the handle, preventing its smaller DUB side from entering the handle opening. Follow the tool's actual stack diagram rather than improvising from bearing diameter.

Does a BB30 removal tool also install the bearing?

A tool set may include pressing bushings but not the press mechanism. Check the contents and required press separately; do not use removal impacts as an installation method.

Press-fit removal and installation: a bounded work sequence

Press-fit removal can damage a bearing or cup. Do not assume an extracted unit is reusable. This sequence helps you check a model-specific procedure, not replace one; it intentionally gives no universal press force, heat treatment, torque or spacer count.

StageWork to planStop condition
IdentifyRemove the crank by its own procedure; identify cup versus directly seated bearing.Unknown threading, adapters or integrated wiring.
RemoveEngage the specified remover; support the frame and watch the opposite cup.Poor engagement, unexpected movement or need for uncontrolled force.
InspectExamine the seat, component and retained parts.Cracks, damaged seat or unclear repair-fit requirement.
PrepareUse the frame/component maker's prescribed surface preparation.Conflicting grease, dry-fit or retaining-compound instructions.
InstallUse matched drifts and keep the assembly square as it seats.Binding or unexpected resistance; do not force alignment.
ReassembleRestore covers and spacers; apply the crank's specified adjustment.Persistent play, binding or uncertain stack order.

Hope threaded examples: cup tool is not a bearing extractor

The 30 mm BSA manual specifies greased cup threads, hand-starting before tool tightening, and 40–50 N·m for those cups. This is not crank preload and must not be copied to unrelated bottom brackets. Its drive-side cup tightens counterclockwise; the non-drive cup tightens clockwise.

A replaceable bearing inside a removed Hope cup is a different operation from unscrewing the cup. The documents used here identify service parts but do not establish a complete bearing-extraction procedure for every Hope generation.

Grease and cleaning: keep three lubrication jobs separate

The verified SB-6806-1 product specifies Kyodo Yushi SRL grease or an equivalent; that is a record of this product, not a universal recommendation for all bicycle bearings. Other grease labels cannot be treated as equivalent without their compatibility and performance basis.

For routine care, first distinguish cleaning the outside of the assembly from opening a cartridge. Preserve seal lips, dust covers and the documented lubricant. Cleaning cannot restore a damaged raceway or correct a poor seat. An unverified solvent, fill amount or regreasing interval is not supplied here.

LocationWhat to establishCommon mistake to avoid
Inside a sealed cartridgeExact lubricant, serviceability and seal instructions.Treating every sealed bearing as a user-repackable loose-ball assembly.
Cup-to-frame interfaceMaker's required grease, dry fit, anti-seize or compound.Assuming more grease is always correct for every frame material.
Crank contact / adjustment partsCrank-specific lubrication and preload procedure.Using the cup tightening torque as the bearing preload setting.

What is the best grease for bottom-bracket bearings?

There is no single verified answer for every bearing, seal and service arrangement. Identify the named bearing and use its specified lubricant and maintenance method. A factory-grease entry is useful evidence, but not authorization to mix greases or open a non-serviceable cartridge.

Can I repack a cartridge like a loose-ball bottom bracket?

Do not assume so. The cartridge may have seals or an assembly design not intended for that operation. A complete loose-ball or caged-bearing procedure requires the exact cup, cone, ball specification and adjustment method.

Record the missing information before replacing anything

Write down the full bearing marking, bottom-bracket model, crank generation, shell dimensions and which side the part came from. Photograph the order and orientation of covers, spacers and reducers. This makes a technical query reproducible instead of relying on a bicycle brand alone.

If the new assembly binds or has play, stop and revisit component identity, seating, spacers and adjustment. Do not hide the symptom by increasing preload, selecting an oversized bearing without approval or adding an undocumented shim. Keep the unresolved requirement in the work record.

Observation is not diagnosis

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you

Observation or contextInterpretation to considerVerification needed
Cup has wrench fittingsIt may be threaded or thread-together, even in a press-fit frame.Identify the assembly before using an impact remover.
Extractor cannot engage the intended surfaceThe tool or internal sleeve may be unsuitable.Stop instead of driving against a seal, spacer or frame edge.
Roughness, play or creakingBearing damage is only one possible issue.Identify the source and inspect the complete assembly; do not compensate with arbitrary preload.

Plan the work safely

01

Identify and record

Identify the frame interface, bottom-bracket part and crank. Keep the exact manuals and a record of washers, covers and left/right positions.

02

Check the context

Select a tool that reaches the intended component and a press support that matches the assembly. Wear eye protection and support the work securely.

03

Verify before acting

Follow the exact component procedure and surface-preparation requirements. Stop at unexpected resistance, damage or uncertain engagement.

04

Keep the decision traceable

Restore the prescribed seals, spacers and crank adjustment. Check smooth rotation and play before use; unresolved damage requires qualified inspection.

Capture the information a model search cannot guess

Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
