Air Bearings: CMM Guidance, Spindles & Supply Requirements

Aerostatic supports use a supplied gas film; they do not behave like rolling bearings. Coordinate-measuring-machine stages and air spindles need specified surfaces, air quality, stiffness and supply behavior. Vacuum preloading is a support technique, not proof that the assembly is suitable for a vacuum process.

Keep the evidence with the model shortlist

The models on this page illustrate bearing roles; they are not confirmed replacements for an unspecified machine. Keep the original complete marking, machine position, load and speed duty, temperature, lubricant and mounting arrangement together. Check the candidate's recorded values below and leave unreported parameters unknown.

Define the duty

What matters in this application

Architecture

Identify linear pads, bushings, rotary spindle supports or vacuum-preloaded elements.

Gas supply

Use the maker's air quality, pressure, flow and supply-loss requirements.

Mechanical interface

Check guide-surface finish, flatness, mounting, load/moment capacity and required stiffness.

Choose an architecture

Which bearing structures make sense?

Aerostatic guide supports

Consider for designed low-friction precision guidance.

Check first: The support, guide surfaces and clean/dry air system must be evaluated together.

Air spindle systems

Use a complete spindle design for the specified speed and load.

Check first: A rolling-bearing dimension cannot define a substitute air-bearing spindle.

From shortlist to specification

Work through the selection

  1. Identify the motion architecture, load directions and accuracy requirement.
  2. Obtain the component's film, load/stiffness and gas-supply specifications.
  3. Verify guide surfaces, mounting and the required supply-loss protections.
  4. Commission using the manufacturer's approved air-supply and motion checks.
Investigate before replacing

Symptoms worth checking

Stiction or disturbed motion

Inspect supply condition, surfaces and alignment through the maker's procedure.

Poor repeatability

Check structural stiffness, thermal conditions and metrology as well as the bearing film.

Symptoms are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis. Isolate equipment safely and follow its maintenance procedures before inspection.

Have the original designation?

Common questions

Application questions, answered

Is a CMM air bearing interchangeable with a linear ball bearing?

No. Guide surfaces, stiffness, mounting and gas-supply requirements differ.

Can ordinary shop air always be used?

No. Follow the bearing manufacturer's specified cleaning, drying, pressure and filtration requirements.
