Bearing seizure, smearing and scuffing investigation

A seized or heavily smeared bearing calls for an investigation of lubrication, loading and assembly conditions, not an attempt to free it and continue running. Retain evidence of heat, transferred material and damaged lubricant before cleaning.

Inspect the pattern, then test the explanation

Smearing / scuffing

Sliding and disruption of the lubricating film can produce local adhesion and a rough, smeared contact surface.

Checks & easily confused patterns

Evidence to investigate

Review speed and load together, starts and stops, lubricant suitability and water ingress. Preserve the original surface and lubricant evidence.

Do not infer from appearance alone

Do not infer an exact temperature from a mark or prescribe more preload. The acceptable load, clearance and lubrication depend on the bearing arrangement.

Technical basis: NSK Bearing Doctor, individual damage-type references. Original BearingScope illustrations and investigation prompts, reviewed 4 October 2026. Colour, shape and depth are illustrative; source snapshots are retained in the internal audit.

Observation is not diagnosis

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you

Observation or contextInterpretation to considerVerification needed
Locked or difficult rotationSerious internal or external interferenceIsolate energy and inspect the complete assembly without forcing rotation.
Smeared contact surfacesSliding contact may have disrupted the filmReview speed, load, lubrication and recent starts or stops.
Heat discolourationTemperature history needs reviewDo not infer an exact peak temperature from colour.

A practical investigation sequence

01

Identify and record

Stop using the affected assembly under the equipment's safe procedure. Stored loads and hot parts must be controlled before disassembly.

02

Check the context

Record the last normal operating point, any loss of lubrication and changes in load or speed. Keep the original lubricant identification.

03

Verify before acting

Inspect for secondary damage to shaft seats, housing, seals and adjacent components. Do not assume that only the bearing needs attention.

04

Keep the decision traceable

Compare the original model, clearance and mounting arrangement before selecting a candidate replacement. Verify minimum-load requirements for the exact bearing.

Capture the information a model search cannot guess

Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
