Oscillating bearings: small movements, standby vibration and selection inputs
Back-and-forth motion is not equivalent to continuous rotation at a conveniently averaged rpm. Motion amplitude, reversal rate, load and lubricant replenishment at the contacts matter. Collect these inputs before applying a rotary bearing life or lubrication estimate.

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you
| Observation or context | Interpretation to consider | Verification needed |
|---|---|---|
| Small-angle oscillation | Repeated contact region | Record angle, frequency and load direction. |
| Standstill with vibration | No normal rotation is required for contact motion | Include transport and standby exposure. |
| Intermittent full rotation | A different duty segment | Keep it separate from oscillation in the duty record. |
A practical investigation sequence
Identify and record
Describe the motion in degrees or radians with cycle frequency and dwell periods. Do not mix cycles per second with shaft rpm.
Check the context
Record peak and sustained load, shock, environmental exposure and available lubrication method.
Verify before acting
Choose a bearing family using application evidence, then verify the maker's oscillation and lubrication guidance for that family.
Keep the decision traceable
Treat false brinelling or fretting findings as a reason to review the duty and contact conditions, not simply to select a higher catalogue C rating.
Capture the information a model search cannot guess
Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
