Bearing misalignment, shaft deflection and self-aligning designs
A self-aligning bearing can accommodate specified angular conditions; it does not make every shaft, housing or load error acceptable. Distinguish static seat misalignment from changing shaft deflection and verify the permitted conditions for the exact bearing and assembly.

What the evidence can — and cannot — tell you
| Observation or context | Interpretation to consider | Verification needed |
|---|---|---|
| Housing seats not coaxial | Assembly geometry problem | Measure seat locations and alignment against the drawing. |
| Shaft deflects under load | Operating geometry changes | Evaluate the actual load case and support stiffness. |
| Self-aligning replacement proposed | Family change affects the system | Check load capacity, fits, axial location, seals and clearance as well as angle. |
A practical investigation sequence
Identify and record
Record the position and direction of observed wear or edge loading before dismantling loses the evidence.
Check the context
Review alignment measurements, shaft runout and seat geometry using appropriate instruments and procedures.
Verify before acting
Compare the actual permitted misalignment from the model documentation. Do not borrow a generic angle from another family.
Keep the decision traceable
Correct the verified geometry or arrangement issue before treating a bearing substitution as the solution.
Capture the information a model search cannot guess
Keep this checklist with your inspection or comparison. Checking a box only records that you have collected the item; it does not certify the bearing.
