At a glance
Cylindrical roller
Rollers run on cylindrical raceways; flanges determine axial location and displacement.
Choose for a well-aligned radial load path or a non-locating shaft position such as an NU design.
Spherical roller
Barrel-shaped rollers run against a spherical outer-ring raceway.
Choose when heavy loading occurs with shaft deflection or angular misalignment within the product limit.
Key differences
Typical design distinctions. The complete designation and current product specification take precedence.

| What to compare | Cylindrical roller | Spherical roller |
|---|---|---|
| Misalignment | Generally limited | Self-aligning within specified limits |
| Radial stiffness | High for suitable design | High load capability with aligning geometry |
| Axial load | Determined by flange arrangement | Can accommodate combined load in suitable designs |
| Axial displacement | NU/N designs allow movement internally | Self-alignment is not the same as axial floating |
| Mounting | Separate rings may simplify installation | Cylindrical or tapered bore variants |
| Selection | Alignment, flange design and speed | Load, misalignment, clearance and lubrication |
Before you choose
- Self-aligning does not remove the need for suitable shaft and housing fits.
- Do not confuse angular accommodation with thermal axial displacement.
- Use the bearing's allowed misalignment under the actual load and seal configuration.
Check the actual model
Search a full designation, inspect its technical data, then compare candidate records. Similar names or dimensions do not guarantee interchangeability.
Filters show recorded catalogue attributes. Open each candidate to confirm its exact specification.
A few things worth clarifying
Is spherical always preferable on a bent shaft?
Only within the specified angular and loading limits; excessive deflection still needs correction.
Can an NU cylindrical bearing support thrust?
Its standard non-locating design does not provide axial location through the rolling contacts.
