Rolling-Mill & Paper-Roll Bearings: Chocks, Heat & Sealing

Steel work rolls, backup rolls, Z-mill supports and paper-process rolls have different bearing arrangements. Separate roll force and chock geometry from the heat, moisture and growth of a paper-machine roll. The generic spherical record is an auxiliary-support reference, not a multi-row roll-neck or drying-cylinder replacement.

Keep the evidence with the model shortlist

The models on this page illustrate bearing roles; they are not confirmed replacements for an unspecified machine. Keep the original complete marking, machine position, load and speed duty, temperature, lubricant and mounting arrangement together. Check the candidate's recorded values below and leave unreported parameters unknown.

Define the duty

What matters in this application

Roll position

Identify work roll, backup roll, guide roll or auxiliary support and its complete arrangement.

Load and alignment

Include separating force, shock, axial location, deflection and chock stiffness.

Heat and contamination

Review cooling water, scale, lubricant supply, sealing and actual bearing temperatures.

Choose an architecture

Which bearing structures make sense?

Multi-row roll-neck arrangements

Use the mill-specific bearing/chock specification.

Check first: Bore and load rating alone do not establish row arrangement or roll compatibility.

Auxiliary spherical-roller supports

Investigate only for a separately calculated process-roll support.

Check first: Check axial location, hot clearance and seals.

Side by side

Compare the recorded specifications

Different sizes and bearing structures are shown for different duties. C and C₀ are catalogue load ratings, not permissible equipment loads. Limiting speed is not an approved operating speed.

From shortlist to specification

Work through the selection

  1. Identify the roll position and exact bearing/chock assembly.
  2. Obtain roll-force, shock, temperature and axial-load cases.
  3. Verify the full arrangement, fits, chock support and lubricant/seal system.
  4. Follow the mill's installation, inspection and monitoring procedure.
Investigate before replacing

Symptoms worth checking

Water-contaminated oil

Inspect cooling-water barriers, drainage and seals.

Uneven race loading

Review chock alignment, shaft deflection and support stiffness.

Symptoms are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis. Isolate equipment safely and follow its maintenance procedures before inspection.

Common questions

Application questions, answered

Can a spherical bearing replace a multi-row cylindrical roll-neck bearing?

Not as a catalogue substitution. The architectures, locating functions and structural interfaces differ.

Does a mill bearing always need greater clearance?

No universal grade applies. The specified fits and operating temperatures determine the required clearance.

Are paper-roll and steel rolling-mill bearings selected in the same way?

Both need defined loads and support geometry, but their operating duties differ. For paper rolls, establish the wet or dry section, moisture exposure, cylinder temperature, lubrication and axial thermal movement. Do not transfer a steel-mill roll-neck arrangement to a paper machine by bore size.
