Marine Bearings: Cutless, Propeller-Shaft & Rudder Supports

Water-lubricated stern-tube/cutless bearings, rudder bearings and inboard rolling supports use different materials and calculation methods. Record the actual support type before matching sizes. A stainless rolling bearing does not automatically replace a marine plain bearing.

Keep the evidence with the model shortlist

The models on this page illustrate bearing roles; they are not confirmed replacements for an unspecified machine. Keep the original complete marking, machine position, load and speed duty, temperature, lubricant and mounting arrangement together. Check the candidate's recorded values below and leave unreported parameters unknown.

Define the duty

What matters in this application

Plain-bearing interface

Record shaft diameter, bearing length, housing fit, grooves and specified running clearance.

Water and materials

Establish water quality, flow, dry-running restrictions and shaft/bearing material compatibility.

Alignment and thrust

Separate propeller thrust support from radial stern-tube support and check shaft alignment.

Choose an architecture

Which bearing structures make sense?

Water-lubricated plain supports

Use the approved material, clearance and water-supply design.

Check first: A rolling-bearing L10 calculation is not a plain-bearing wear/film validation.

Inboard rolling supports

Assess only for the particular dry or oil-lubricated shaft position.

Check first: The bearing, housing, seals and thrust path must match the propulsion arrangement.

From shortlist to specification

Work through the selection

  1. Identify stern tube, rudder, thrust or inboard radial support.
  2. Measure the complete interface and verify material and lubrication requirements.
  3. Check alignment and the approved load/clearance method for the support type.
  4. Follow the marine equipment's inspection and installation requirements.
Investigate before replacing

Symptoms worth checking

Rapid plain-bearing wear

Investigate alignment, abrasives, water supply and shaft condition.

Corrosion at an inboard support

Find the water path and review sealing and material compatibility.

Symptoms are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis. Isolate equipment safely and follow its maintenance procedures before inspection.

Common questions

Application questions, answered

Is a cutless bearing a sealed ball bearing?

No. The terms refer to different support constructions and lubrication requirements.

Can diameter alone determine marine replacement fit?

No. Length, grooves, housing fit, materials, clearance, shaft condition and approval requirements are also needed.
